The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has passed a vote of confidence on the Acting Managing Director of the Edo Broadcasting Service, EBS, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, saying his leadership has brought remarkable turnaround and renewed energy to the state-owned broadcaster. In a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Bernard Joman Eguakhide, in Benin City, the NLC said Alenkhe’s appointment has repositioned EBS as a vibrant and competitive media house.
According to the labour body, the EBS boss, who has served the station for over 20 years, has introduced far-reaching reforms that have improved news delivery, current affairs, cultural content and live programming.
The Council noted that EBS now runs robust live news bulletins with reporters filing in live reports from Lagos, Abuja and across the three senatorial districts of Edo State, a development that has given greater visibility to government projects, policies and programmes, as well as the activities of the people.
It listed other milestones under Alenkhe’s stewardship to include the live coverage of the funeral service of the late Catholic Archbishop of Benin, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, and the live broadcast of the WAFU B football tournament final from Burkina Faso.
The NLC said these feats have shown that EBS has moved beyond the traditional state broadcasting model and is now embracing the demands of the digital age and global best practices.
The labour centre commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for appointing Alenkhe, describing the choice as well-informed and strategic, given his wealth of experience as a seasoned journalist and his long-standing commitment to the station.
“We are confident that Alenkhe will further reposition EBS and put the station on the world broadcasting map,” the NLC said.
Consequently, the Council declared a “vote of implicit confidence” in the Acting Managing Director and pledged its full support for the continuation of the reforms and innovations that have returned vibrancy to the Edo Broadcasting Service.
