Edo First Lady's Office Hosts GBV Management Committee
The Coordinator of the Edo State First Lady's Office, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has urged stakeholders to intensify efforts to combat gender-based violence (GBV) and protect women's and children's rights.
This call to action was made during the 13th GBV Management Committee meeting at the Government House in Benin City.
Mrs. Anani emphasized the need for collective action to address GBV, highlighting its devastating impact on victims.
She stressed that both men and women suffer from GBV, but women are disproportionately affected.
The Coordinator also noted that GBV encompasses not only physical violence but also emotional trauma with significant socioeconomic implications.
Some forms of GBV include,Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) A harmful practice that violates the rights of the girl child,Domestic Violence-Often visible and deeply ingrained in societal norms,Emotional Trauma, Can be inflicted on both men and women, affecting their well-being and self-esteem
Reaffirming Edo State government commitment in tackling GBV,The Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Dr. Samson Osagie, expressed confidence in the Governor's administration and requested increased collaboration and support to facilitate efforts.
The meeting provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss strategies for improving effectiveness and efficiency in addressing GBV.
Presentations were made on reports from January to March 2025, covering ongoing cases and progress toward meeting the 2025 target.
Key discussions included: Seeking government support for adequate funding, Collaboration and Partnerships,Fostering partnerships to combat GBV,Awareness and Sensitization- Educating the public on GBV and promoting healthy relationships
The Edo State Government's efforts to combat GBV align with national and international initiatives. Ekiti State, for example, has established a robust GBV Management Committee and implemented various programs, including:
-GBV Law- Enacted to protect vulnerable populations,Sexual Assault Referral Center (SARC)Providing support services for survivors and Economic Empowerment Programs, Aiming to reduce poverty and promote women's right
