The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is gearing up for a memorable 70th anniversary celebration, with the inauguration of a nine-person planning committee. Chaired by the union's Deputy President, Dr. Abimbola Oyetunde.

The committee comprises experienced journalists from various states, including Adamawa, Imo, Oyo, Kano, Akwa Ibom, Ogun, and the FCT.

According to the National Secretary, Achike Chude, the committee's composition reflects the union's commitment to making the celebration a resounding success.

 "The president's careful selection of committee members indicates his determination to make this anniversary one to remember," Chude stated.

The celebration promises to be a showcase of the union's growth, dynamism, challenges, and successes since its inception.

 It will also honor the contributions of members and leaders who have shaped the union over the years. With a two-month window to plan the event, the committee chairperson, Dr. Oyetunde, urged everyone to "brace up for the work ahead."

As the NUJ prepares to mark this significant milestone, it's clear that the celebration will be a testament to the union's enduring commitment to journalism excellence and the advancement of press freedom in Nigeria.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Edo State Council, Dr. Festus Alenkhe, has extended warm felicitations to the Muslim community in Edo State on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, marking the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan.

In a heartfelt message, Dr. Alenkhe prayed for the rewards of their sacrifices and the answers to their prayers during the fasting period. He expressed his desire for the Eid al-Fitr celebrations to bring peace, joy, and countless blessings to the people of Edo State.

Dr. Alenkhe also offered special prayers for Muslim journalists in Edo State, seeking Allah's guidance and protection as they discharge their duties with diligence and integrity, upholding the ethics of the journalism profession.

As the Muslim community gathers to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, Dr. Alenkhe wished everyone in Edo State and their loved ones a joyous and blessed Sallah, filled with unity, gratitude, and barakah.

In addition, the NUJ Chairman seized the opportunity to appeal to the people of Edo State to continue supporting and cooperating with security agencies in their efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.

Edo First Lady's Coordinator Inspires Muslim Women To Embody The Spirit Of Ramadan

Mrs. Edesili Anani, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Edo State, recently hosted the Coalition of Edo Muslim Women Association at the Government House, where she emphasized the importance of adhering to the principles of Ramadan. 

Anani stressed that Muslims must not only obey the tenets of Ramadan but also instill these values in their children, ensuring a bright and morally sound future for the younger generation.

Anani commended the association for their tireless efforts in supporting women across Edo State, acknowledging their role as a pillar of strength for many.

 She also expressed gratitude for their visit to the Government House, where they offered prayers for the state government, Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, and the entire Edo State.

The Coordinator underscored the significance of women's participation in politics, emphasizing that their voices must be heard. 

She reminded the association members that the system's foundation lies in the family, local government, and state, making it crucial for women's voices to be represented at all levels.

Hajia Ziliatu Osagie, matron of the Coalition of Edo Muslim Women Association, explained that the purpose of their Ramadan visit was to offer prayers for the peace, progress, and development of Edo State. 

The visit culminated in a prayer session led by the association's spiritual leader, Hajia Nanafatimah Oshigwe, followed by a photograph session.

Anani's remarks and the association's visit highlight the importance of collaboration and mutual support between the government and community organizations in promoting the well-being and development of Edo State.

Edo Governor Okpebholo Denounces Vigilante Killing of Travellers Mistaken for Kidnappers

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has vehemently denounced the brutal killing of suspected kidnappers by a mob in Uromi, East North East Local Government Area. 

The governor described theact as "barbaric and condemnable," emphasizing that such violence is unacceptable in the state.

Represented by the Chief Security Officer (CSO), Government House, SP Solomon Osaghale, the governor vowed to ensure that those responsible face justice. Osaghale stressed that the governor is deeply concerned about the incident and has directed a thorough investigation.

According to Osaghale, the victims were intercepted by local security while traveling through the town from Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Upon discovering guns in their vehicle, a mob attacked and killed them. The CSO assured that over four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Governor Okpebholo has also commended community leaders for their efforts in de-escalating tensions and handling the situation with restraint. 

The governor has directed the State Police Command and other security agencies to conduct a speedy investigation and bring those found culpable to book.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for justice and an end to mob violence. 

The governor's swift response and condemnation of the act have been welcomed by the community, particularly the Hausa Community in Uromi, who have expressed gratitude for the governor's efforts to restore peace and normalcy to the area.

Catholic Community Takes A Stand Against Incessant Kidnapping and Violence In Edo State

In a powerful display of unity and determination, members of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi in Edo State staged a peaceful protest against the kidnapping and killing of their priests. 

The protest, which took place recently, was sparked by the recent abduction of Rev. Fr. Philip Ekweli and seminarian Andrew Peter.

While Rev. Fr. Ekweli was released after a ransom was paid, Andrew Peter tragically lost his life at the hands of his captors.

The protesters, including priests and faithful, marched through the streets of Auchi, carrying placards with poignant messages that condemned the violence and demanded justice. 

At the forefront of the protest was Rev. Fr. (Dr) Clement Anadevha, Director of the Justice Development and Justice Commission (JDPC), who urged the government to declare a state of emergency on security of lives and property.

The protesters also visited the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, where they met with Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel  Dunia, Bishop  of Auchi Diocese.

Rev. Fr. Anadevha led the group in expressing their outrage and disappointment over the attacks on priests in the area.

 In response, Bishop Dunia shared his concerns about the escalating violence and the government's seeming inaction.

 He emphasized the need for urgent intervention, highlighting the devastating impact of bandits occupying farmlands and depriving farmers of their livelihoods.

The protest also made its way to the Etsako West Council secretariat, where the chairman, Mr. Valentine Okwilagwe, received the protesters. 

He assured them that he would take their request to the relevant authorities, offering a glimmer of hope for the Catholic community's quest for justice and security.

As the Catholic community continues to demand action from the government, their peaceful protest serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for effective security measures to protect lives and property in Edo State.

Enhancing Women Participation:Edo First Lady's Office Celebrates IWD With Professional Women

The Coordinator of the First Lady office in Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpbeholo Anani, hosted an event to commemorate International Women's Day, emphasizing the need for women's active participation in politics. 

This  year event's theme, "Accelerating Action: Enhancing Women Participation In Politics," resonated throughout the gathering.

Mrs. Anani stressed that women's involvement in politics is crucial for a robust democracy, citing research that highlights the benefits of increased female representation in policymaking. 

She encouraged women to start at the grassroots level, take charge, and make a positive impact in their communities.

Keynote speaker Dr. Amen Ogbemudia Uhunmwangho emphasized the importance of women's decision-making roles, while Maria Edeko, Deputy Speaker, Edo House of Assembly advised women to invest time in politics and assert their rights. 

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Chief Barrister Olabisi Idaomi, urged women to play politics in all aspects of life with boldness .

Mrs. Adesuwa Ehimuan, Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, emphasized that despite progress, women remain underrepresented in politics due to harmful norms, violence, and stereotypes. 

"To address this, we need a law to prevent violence, invest in women's leadership development, and promote equal participation," she urged.

"We must challenge patriarchal norms and stereotypes to create a world where women have an equal voice in politics. A world where women can lead, participate, and thrive. We can make this happen, and we must make it happen. Let us accelerate action and enhance women's participation in politics. Now is the time."

Meanwhile, Mrs. Irene Akedeno, President of the Medical Women Association Nigeria, stressed the importance of women's health for active participation in politics. "Women must take control of their health to ensure a healthy lifestyle. 

This includes screening for preventable cancers, managing hypertension, and maintaining regular medical check-ups."

As she aptly put it, "Health is wealth. A healthy mother is a healthy nation, and a healthy nation is a productive nation. As we accelerate action, let us prioritize positive action towards a good lifestyle."

EFCC Clarifies Release Of Ex Governor Okpebholo 's Aide , Amid Allegations of Naira Mutilation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has shed light on the circumstances surrounding the release of Kelly Okungbowa, alias Ebo Stone, and former aide to governor Okpebholo.

Who was taken into custody on allegations of naira mutilation and abuse. Effang Okim, the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC's Benin Zone, revealed that the commission's decision to release Okungbowa was motivated by a desire to ensure that he faces justice in a fair and transparent manner.

According to Okim, the EFCC is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their social status or influence, are held accountable for their actions. He emphasized that the commission's handling of Okungbowa's case was guided by a strict adherence to established protocols and procedures.

Okim also took the opportunity to address speculation surrounding Okungbowa's detention and subsequent release. 

He explained that the decision to hold Okungbowa in a separate cell was informed by concerns about his potential influence within the community, particularly among young people. He stressed that this decision was not taken lightly and was motivated by a desire to prevent any potential disruptions to the investigation.

The EFCC's handling of Okungbowa's case has been subject to scrutiny, with some quarters suggesting that he received preferential treatment. However, Okim was keen to dispel these insinuations, pointing out that Okungbowa was detained and brought before a competent court of law, in accordance with established procedures.

Okim expressed satisfaction with the progress of the case, which has been adjourned to May 20th for hearing at a Federal High Court.

He praised the efforts of the EFCC's investigators and prosecutors, who have worked tirelessly to build a robust case against Okungbowa.

The EFCC's partnership with the media has been instrumental in raising awareness about the commission's efforts to combat economic and financial crimes. 

Okim acknowledged the vital role that the media has played in supporting the EFCC's work, stating that the commission's successes would not have been possible without the media's cooperation.

However, the issue of ritual killings, which has been linked to fraudulent activities, has raised concerns among stakeholders.

 Dr. Festus Alenkhe, Chairman of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, highlighted the alarming rise in ritual killings, which he attributed to the activities of fraudsters.

Okim clarified that the EFCC's mandate is focused on economic and financial crimes, and that ritual killings, unless linked to financial fraud, fall outside the commission's purview. 

Nevertheless, he acknowledged the gravity of the issue and emphasized the need for a collaborative effort to address this challenge.

Edo Dukes Seek Forgiveness From Oba of Benin Amid Rebellion

A group of Enigie, who were previously suspended by the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, on allegations of rebellion, have appealed to the monarch to forgive them for their transgressions.

The dukes, who spoke at a press conference in Benin, denied allegations that they had sworn an oath not to pay allegiance to the throne.

According to Ogiugo Victor Etinosa, the Enogie of Ugo N'Iyekikpoba, the Enigie are truly sorry for any errors they may have committed and acknowledge the Oba as their monarch and father figure. 

Etinosa emphasized that the Enigie are the Oba's subjects and should be treated with compassion and forgiveness.

The Enigie categorically denied swearing to any oath that would prevent them from:

Paying allegiance to the Oba,they denied swearing to an oath not to pay allegiance to the Oba of Benin.

On their visit to the palace, they denied swearing to an oath not to visit the palace of the Oba of Benin.

They  also denied swearing to an oath not to participate in any activities of the Oba and the Palace.

Etinosa pleaded with the Oba to temper justice with mercy and forgive the Enigie for their shortcomings. 

He promised that the Enigie would henceforth follow the Oba's instructions to the letter and continue to perform their tasks and obligations to the Palace.

The Enigie's suspension was reportedly due to alleged anti-palace and rebellious activities against the Oba and the traditional institution. 

However, with their denial of the allegations and their appeal for forgiveness, it remains to be seen how the Oba will respond to their plea.

Civil Society Groups Condemn President Tinubu's Emergency Rule in Rivers State

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, a coalition of over 200 civil society organizations, has vehemently condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State. 

The group has called on the President to immediately revoke the proclamation, restore democratic institutions, and apologize to the people of Rivers State and Nigeria for undermining their democratic rights.

The Civil Society Organisations Situation Room has raised concerns about the dangers of the Emergency proclamation, citing its contravention of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. 

The group argues that the President's action undermines the principles of federalism, the separation of powers, and the democratic rights of the people.

The they demands that President Tinubu revoke the declaration and restore constitutional order in Rivers State.

The Civil Society Organisations Situation Room calls for the reinstatement of elected officials and the restoration of democratic institutions in Rivers State.

The group demands a public apology from President Tinubu for violating the democratic rights of the people and usurping the powers of their elected leaders.

They  warned that if the declaration is allowed to stand, it sets a dangerous precedent for future undemocratic actions by the federal government against other states. This could embolden leaders to subvert democracy for personal or political gain, jeopardizing Nigeria's progress in strengthening democratic governance since 1999 and pushing the country toward authoritarian rule.

Gruesome Double Murder Rocks Benin City: Pregnant Woman And 6-Year-Old Daughter Killed By An Estranged Spouse

A horrific incident has shaken the residents of Benin City, as a 41-year-old pregnant woman, Osasu Aimienoho Isaac, and her 6-year-old daughter, Alleluya Uwuigbe, were allegedly murdered in their home. 

The suspect, Wealth Nnamdi, the would-be husband of the deceased, is currently on the run.

The tragic event occurred at a house on Idiagbonya Street, Ovbiogie, on the Benin-Lagos road in Benin City. 

According to eyewitnesses, the couple had a heated disagreement,which unfortunately escalated into a fatal confrontation.

Neighbors reported that the couple frequently quarreled, but this particular incident seemed more intense. After the dastardly act, Nnamdi allegedly locked the body of the pregnant woman and her daughter in the room and fled the scene.

The gruesome discovery was made when neighbors noticed a strong odor emanating from the room. 

They alerted the police, who forced open the door to find the lifeless bodies of the mother covered up in a cloth on the floor and her daughter body was on the bed. The victims were subsequently taken to the mortuary.

Esther Gabriel, the mother of the deceased, expressed her shock and devastation over the loss of her daughter and granddaughter. The sisters of the deceased demanded justice and appealed to the police to apprehend the suspect.

Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident and assured that the police would thoroughly investigate the matter to ensure justice is served.

 However, the area remained deserted when visited, with residents seemingly fearful of the unknown.

In a heartwarming display of kindness and empathy, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, extended a helping hand to Barrister Benedicta Francis, a visually impaired mother who recently welcomed a baby girl. 

This gesture is a testament to the Edo State Government's commitment to empowering women and people with disabilities.

Barrister Francis, who lost her sight ten years ago due to a brief illness, received gift items from Mrs. Anani, who was represented by Hajia Nimata Ikhilor, wife of the Secretary to the State Government.

The gift items were presented to both mother and child, accompanied by warm congratulations and prayers for their well-being.

Mrs. Monica Adams, Barrister Francis's mother, shared the challenges they faced during delivery, including a harrowing moment when the baby stopped breathing in the womb. 

Thankfully, medical intervention ensured both mother and child are now in good health.

Expressing her gratitude, Mrs. Adams praised the First Lady's office for their love, care, and generosity. 

She also offered prayers for the continued peace and prosperity of the Governor's administration.

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, is thrilled with the progress of the first flyover bridge in Edo State, located at Ramat Park, Benin City. 

The project, which commenced in November 2024, is expected to be completed within 18 months.

During an unscheduled visit to the site, the contractor, Mr. Andy Duan of CCECC, informed Governor Okpebholo that 20% of the project has been completed. Duan assured that the company is working according to specifications and is committed to meeting the construction deadline.

Governor Okpebholo emphasized his administration's commitment to delivering quality infrastructural development. 

He warned that contracts would be revoked if contractors fail to meet specifications. The Governor also assured Edo people that his administration would continue to monitor and inspect projects to ensure quality job delivery.

Other road projects inspected by Governor Okpebholo included the Uteh Temboga road, open drainage at Upper Ekenhua road, and the Catholic Charismatic Renewal road Ugbiyoko.

The Edo State Ministry of Justice is strengthening the Citizens Mediation Centre and the Citizens Rights Department to enhance the justice sector's effectiveness. 

According to Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Samson Osagie Esquire, the Governor Monday Okpebholo's administration is committed to ensuring the justice ministry promotes social harmony, peace, and swift access to justice.

The Citizens Mediation Centre offers free mediation services to vulnerable citizens, providing an alternative dispute resolution mechanism. 

The Citizens Rights Department has successfully intervened in 393 cases, including landlord-tenant disputes, domestic violence, and human rights violations.

Key achievements of the ministry include:Alternative Dispute Resolution,where 103 cases settled through mediation, preventing unnecessary litigation.

"Our Citizens' Support initiative has successfully addressed 217 general complaints from citizens who were victims of injustice, oppression, and corruption, providing them with a voice and a pathway to resolution".

The ministry has therefore released helplines, which  includes (08074388080 and 07087058094) for judicial support.

By enhancing these mechanisms, the Edo State Ministry of Justice aims to foster a more efficient and accessible justice system.

A major shake-up is looming in Edo State's political landscape as the Edo North Conscience (ENC), a prominent political group, intensifies its campaign to oust Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku as Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.

The group's bold move is driven by concerns that Agbebaku's continued tenure undermines the moral and political values of the state and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

At a recent stakeholders' meeting in Auchi, Etsako West, the ENC rallied support from across the Edo North district, unified in their opposition to Agbebaku's retention as Speaker. 

The group's leader, Mr. Oshioke Aledeh, and Secretary, Mr. Tunde Balogun, signed a communique that signaled a dramatic push for change in Edo politics.

The ENC has labeled Agbebaku a "political brute," accusing him of orchestrating a brutal campaign that left APC members reeling in pain and discomfort during the tumultuous state assembly elections. 

The group also recounted tales of assault suffered by prominent APC leaders and members at the hands of Agbebaku and his supporters.

With the APC now commanding a significant majority in the House, boasting 13 seats to the PDP's 11, the ENC has vowed to champion the cause for Agbebaku's removal.

 Speaking at the Government House in Benin City, Mrs. Anani stressed that good oral health is vital for overall well-being and quality of life.

She highlighted the consequences of poor oral health, including tooth decay, gum disease, and even heart disease. 

Mrs. Anani encouraged the staff to prioritize oral health by adopting simple habits such as regular brushing, dental check-ups, and limiting sugary snacks and drinks.

By making these habits a part of daily routine, individuals can significantly reduce the risk of oral health problems.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has emphasized the crucial role journalists play in disaster management. Mr. Ojuederie Kenoma, Head of Operations at NEMA's Edo State Operations Office, reiterated this point during a visit to the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Edo State chapter.

Kenoma acknowledged that journalists are essential stakeholders in disseminating timely and accurate information during disasters.

 He sought to rebuild collaborative relationships between NEMA and the media, recognizing the importance of joint efforts in disaster management.

"We seek collaboration to improve our understanding of disaster management and to find effective ways to disseminate information to the public on disaster control and prevention measures," Kenoma stated.

In response, Festus Alenkhe, Chairman of the Edo State NUJ, assured Kenoma of the union's support. 

Alenkhe emphasized the need for training programs to educate media professionals on their roles in disaster situations.

"We propose a training or retraining exercise to enhance our collaboration and ensure we are well-equipped to respond during disaster management," Alenkhe said.

Mrs. Edesili Anani, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, has urged Nigerians to seek medical treatment for epilepsy, emphasizing that it is a common non-infectious neurological disorder prevalent in developing countries, including Nigeria. 

This call to action was made during a symposium held at Saint Gabriel The Archangel Catholic Church in Benin City, marking Purple Day 2025 against Epilepsy.

Anani, represented by Haija Nimata Ikhilor, Wife of the Secretary to the State Government, lamented the persistence of misconceptions and stigma surrounding epilepsy, despite medical advancements. 

She noted that epilepsy is often misunderstood as a spiritual affliction caused by supernatural forces, urging residents to disregard such myths.

Debunking misconceptions and promoting awareness,Professor Frank Imariahgbe, a Neurologist from the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, emphasized that epilepsy is not contagious or deadly, but rather a brain disorder that causes repeated seizures. Uncontrolled seizures can interfere with daily life and lead to early death.

Chairman of the Occasion, Mr. Moses Iyasere, advised people with epilepsy to undergo regular medical check-ups.

Convener of the event, Mrs. Angela Asemota, President of Angie Epilepsy Foundation, highlighted the importance of eradicating epilepsy worldwide, prompting the organization of the symposium to mark the 2025 Purple Day celebration.

Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder affecting approximately 8 in every 1000 people in Nigeria.It is not contagious and cannot be spread through touch or contact.

With proper treatment, most people with epilepsy can live full and productive lives.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, has emphasized the importance of utilizing the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, 2011, to promote transparency and accountability in governance.

This call to action was made during a stakeholders' town hall meeting on the application of the FOI Act in Benin City, Edo State.

Empowering citizens through the FOI  Act, enacted on May 28, 2011, has revolutionized governance by shifting from secrecy to citizen participation,Mr. Fagbemi, represented by Mr. Godwin Garuba, Assistant Director and Head of the FOI Unit at the Federal Ministry of Justice, highlighted that the Act empowers Nigerians to seek information about government activities, fostering transparency and accountability.

Emphasizing on the  Key take away from the town hall meeting,Mr.
Fagbemi,  Urged public institutions on proper record keeping to maintain proper records to facilitate easy access to information.

Also ,a responsible use of the FOI Act, The Minister emphasized the need for responsible use of the Act, cautioning against exploiting it for blackmail or political vendettas.

In addition he Urge for the domestication of the FOI Law, which he said that,the Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Samson Osagie, has acknowledged the state's ongoing efforts to domesticate the FOI law.

In Promoting transparency and accountability,Mrs. Faith Nwadishi, Executive Director of the Centre for Transparency Advocacy, explained that the town hall meeting aimed to educate participants on the importance of the FOI Act in demanding accountability from government officials.

As emphasized by the Media Rights Agenda, leveraging technology, social media, and the FOI Act can empower young Nigerians to expose corruption, advocate for transparency, and push for equity.

A landmark event, jointly organized by the Centre for Transparency Advocacy and the Federal Ministry of Justice, with support from the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (ROLAC) programme, successfully convened stakeholders from diverse backgrounds

The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), Mr. Oladele Bankole Balogun, has denied any connection between the EIRS and the death of a two-year-old child involved in an incident with a suspended Public Safety Response team member.

Balogun clarified this during a courtesy visit from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) leadership and journalists in Benin City. He criticized the political undertones surrounding the incident, stating that some individuals aim to discredit the democratically elected government.

Regarding alleged tax increases for private schools in Edo State, Balogun dismissed the claims, emphasizing that the EIRS cannot arbitrarily raise taxes. He explained that taxation is governed by law, requiring legislative process for any changes.

Balogun suggested that stricter enforcement, rather than actual tax increases, might be causing concerns. 

He noted that the EIRS ensures compliance, particularly among individuals and businesses that have underreported or evaded taxes.

He urged Edo residents to view taxation as a civic duty, essential for government projects like roads, schools, and hospitals. Balogun warned that tax evasion is a criminal offense, punishable by law.

The EIRS chairman praised Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo's leadership, citing positive results from the administration's policies. He assured the NUJ of a partnership to promote public awareness on taxation.

Earlier, NUJ Edo State Council Chairman, Dr. Festus Alenkhe, emphasized the need for collaboration between the media and EIRS.

In a dramatic turn of events, soldiers have seized control of the Rivers State Government House, just hours after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state. 

The move is aimed at ending the prolonged political battle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Tension has been escalating in the state since Tuesday evening, with an armored personnel carrier stationed at the entrance of the Government House along Azikiwe Road in Port Harcourt. 

The presence of heavily armed soldiers has effectively barricaded Governor Fubara and his family inside the Government House, preventing them from leaving the premises.

In response to the crisis, Governor Fubara issued a statement reaffirming his administration's commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and the continued progress of Rivers State. He emphasized that his government has prioritized the protection of lives and property, ensuring the state's continuous progress despite the political impasse.

Fubara maintained that his actions and decisions have been guided by his constitutional oath of office and a strong sense of duty. 

He highlighted his efforts to implement the agreed terms of President Tinubu's intervention to broker peace, including welcoming back commissioners who had previously resigned.

However, Fubara lamented that members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have consistently frustrated his efforts, hindering genuine peace and progress.

The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged the management of the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST) to revive the abandoned post office located along Akpakpava road, near the Central Bank of Nigeria in Benin City.

Chairman of the Edo State NUJ, Dr. Festus Alenkhe, made this call when the management of the Edo Territory of NIPOST visited the NUJ secretariat. 

Dr. Alenkhe expressed disappointment that the once-thriving post office had become a hub for street urchins and touts, engaging in nefarious activities.

Despite this, Dr. Alenkhe commended NIPOST's efforts in sustaining the postal service amidst the rise of the internet. He also pledged the support of Edo State journalists in promoting stamp collection for future generations.

In response, Mr. Augustine Aleburu, Manager of the Nigeria Post Service, Edo State Territory, sought collaboration with journalists to enhance NIPOST's services. 

He appreciated the infrastructure development at the NUJ secretariat under Dr. Alenkhe's leadership.

The Catholic Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Most Reverend Gabriel Dunia, has strongly criticized the police's handling of the rescue efforts of a kidnapped seminarian, stating that their actions led to the alleged murder of the 21-year-old victim.

In a telephone interview with journalists, Bishop Dunia expressed his gratitude to the Edo State government for their efforts in rescuing the kidnapped victims, but expressed dissatisfaction with the police's response. 

He emphasized that the police should have put in place better measures to rescue kidnapped victims, rather than relying solely on the efforts of family, friends, and acquaintances.

Bishop Dunia further accused the police of alleged complicity in the kidnap, stating that it was obvious that the police were in league with the abductors and passing crucial messages to them. This, he said, was at variance with the determined attempt by the state government to effect the rescue of the victims.

The bishop also criticized the police for making a premature statement claiming that some of the alleged kidnappers had been killed in a shootout with law enforcement agents.

 He noted that this false disclosure prompted the unknown gunmen to kill the seminarian.

In conclusion, Bishop Dunia expressed his appreciation to all who provided prayers and moral support during the captivity of Reverend Ekweli and the seminarian.

This commitment was made clear at a press conference for MTN CHAMPS Season 3, where Governor Okpebholo, represented by Hon. Enabulele, emphasized the importance of nurturing young athletic talents.

The governor highlighted the significance of the MTN CHAMPS championship, which provides a platform for secondary school students to compete at the highest level. 

This initiative not only promotes sports excellence but also instills discipline, teamwork, and resilience among the youth.

Governor Okpebholo praised MTN's commitment to sports development in Nigeria, noting that their investment demonstrates a clear understanding of the role sports play in youth empowerment and economic growth.

Edo State is on the verge of a revolution in traditional medicine, with the Edo State Traditional Medicines Board poised to restructure and regulate the sector.

 High Chief Dr. Abudu Ugbesia, Chairman of the Board, emphasized the need to eliminate quackery, uphold ethical standards, and promote the benefits of traditional medicine to complement orthodox medical practices.

Chief Ugbesia stressed that traditional medicine is a natural and knowledge-driven practice that requires expertise to be effective. 

He acknowledged that quacks and fraudsters exist in traditional medicine, just as they do in orthodox medicine, but emphasized that human life is precious and such harmful practices will not be tolerated.

The Board plans to register and profile all traditional medicine practitioners across the state, with registration forms available across the three senatorial districts.

This move aims to regulate the sector and ensure that only qualified practitioners are allowed to operate.

Chief Ugbesia also highlighted the need for collaboration between traditional and orthodox medical practitioners. He pointed out that there are medical conditions that modern doctors cannot treat, but traditional healers can, and vice versa.

This collaboration, he believes, can help reduce needless deaths in orthodox hospitals.

As Edo State rises, the Edo State Traditional Medicines Board is rising with it, poised to bring about a new era in traditional medicine practice in the state.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Kelly Okungbowa, popularly known as Ebo Stone, for allegedly abusing the Naira, following a viral video that sparked widespread outrage.

 Okungbowa, who until recently served as the coordinator of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team (PSRT), was suspended by the State Government.

The viral video, which was posted online, shows Okungbowa recklessly spraying and rubbing wads of Naira on two scantily clad exotic dancers at a bar recently. 

This spectacle has triggered a firestorm of condemnation, with many Nigerians expressing outrage and disgust over the incident.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act of 2007 explicitly criminalizes the abuse of the national currency, prescribing penalties of up to six months imprisonment, a ₦50,000 fine, or both. Confirming the arrest, the EFCC's Head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, disclosed that the suspect would face charges upon the conclusion of investigations.

According to Oyewale, Okungbowa will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.

 Meanwhile, the Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commended the EFCC for the swift arrest of Okungbowa.

In a statement, Publicity Secretary of the Edo State PDP Caretaker Committee, Chris Osa Nehikhare, charged the EFCC to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure diligent prosecution in accordance with the CBN Act of 2007.

Nehikhare emphasized that the swift arrest of Okungbowa sends a strong message that such criminal and irresponsible actions will not be tolerated, regardless of the perpetrator's position or influence.

The Edo State Ministry of Justice's Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has found sufficient evidence to prosecute two individuals, Ahunwa Osaro and Odaro Oviarobo, for attempted murder, arson, and malicious damage in Benin City.

Following a review of the case files submitted by the police, the DPP concluded that a prima facie case exists against the two accused. 

A letter issued by the DPP and addressed to the Edo State Commissioner of Police outlined the legal advice, emphasizing the need for full prosecution.

The accused are alleged to have attacked Uyi Tina, Ahunwa Osaro's estranged wife, around ldumwuowina on the Benin-Lagos road in Benin City. 

The incident left Tina hospitalized for over six weeks, resulting in significant property and financial losses.

With the DPP's advice, the case is expected to proceed, marking a crucial step towards justice for the victim. 

The Edo State Ministry of Justice's efforts demonstrate its commitment to upholding the law and protecting citizens rights.

Women Group Protest Alleged Sexual Harassment Allegation Against Akpabio In Edo

A group of concerned women in Edo State held a counter-protest in Benin City to address the alleged sexual harassment claims made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. 

This counter-protest follows an earlier peaceful protest by civil society organizations, women's groups, and concerned citizens, who called for an investigation into the allegations.

Led by Hon. Itohan Osahon Edokpolo, the group visited the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin City. They argued that Senator Natasha's suspension was not a result of sexual harassment but rather due to her disobedience of Senate rules.

 The group emphasized that every organization has its rules, and members who disobey are punished.

The group's leader suggested that Senator Natasha should apologize to the Senate, which might reduce her suspension. 

This sentiment was echoed by Madam Rosemary Elawure, president of the Edo Senior Citizens Forum, who stated that Senator Natasha is unnecessarily dragging the Senate President's name through the mud.

Elawure pointed out that many women have served in the Senate without incident, implying that Senator Natasha's situation is not unique. 

She noted that Senator Oluremi Tunubu, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, served in the Senate for years without any issues of sexual harassment with other women too.

Dr. Festus Alenkhe, chairman of the NUJ Edo State Council, received the protesters and commended them for their peaceful demonstration. 

He assured the group that journalists would provide balanced reporting on the issue and cautioned the protesters to prevent miscreants from hijacking their demonstration that has been peaceful.

During the protest, the group carried placards with messages such as "Natasha leave the Senate President alone," "Natasha should apologize to the Senate," and "Women in leadership can handle their affairs without drawing unnecessary attention."
