I am delighted to extend my warmest congratulations to the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on his resounding victory at the Appeal Court judgment, which reaffirmed his triumph in the September 21, 2024, Edo State gubernatorial election.

The Edo State Branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society is set to honor Amb. Dr. Sunday Osemwengie, a renowned humanitarian, for his outstanding contributions to the state and beyond. 

In a gesture of appreciation, Pastor Monday O. Edogiawerie, Chairman of the Edo State Branch, led a courtesy visit to Amb. Dr. Sunday Osemwengie, Managing Director and CEO of Triple M Luxury Hotel Limited.

The visit was a testament to Amb. Sunday's tireless efforts in humanitarian work and his unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people of Edo State.

As Pastor Edogiawerie arrived at the hotel, he was warmly received by Amb. Sunday, who was eager to learn more about the Red Cross's initiatives. The Chairman began by expressing his gratitude for Amb. Sunday's contributions to the state, highlighting his selfless acts of kindness and generosity. "We are delighted to visit you today, Amb. Sunday," Pastor Edogiawerie said.

 "Your dedication to humanitarian work has not gone unnoticed, and we believe that your values align perfectly with those of the Red Cross."

The Chairman went on to explain the history and mission of the Red Cross, tracing its roots back to the Battle of Solferino in 1859.

He emphasized the organization's commitment to alleviating suffering, promoting humanitarian principles, and supporting vulnerable populations. Amb. Sunday listened intentl, in agreement as Pastor Edogiawerie spoke about the Red Cross's various programs and activities.

As the conversation progressed, Pastor Edogiawerie revealed that the Edo State Branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society had been working tirelessly to support those affected by disasters and conflicts in the state. He cited examples of their recent interventions, including livelihood support for flood victims and response to the MPOX outbreak. Amb. Sunday was impressed by the Red Cross's dedication to being "On the Side of Humanity," and he felt a sense of pride knowing that he shared similar values.

The Chairman then extended an invitation to Amb. Sunday to collaborate with the Red Cross in their upcoming Annual First Aid, Disaster Management, and Leadership Training Camp. He requested Amb. Sunday's support through partnership or sponsorship, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in promoting humanitarian work and disaster preparedness. Amb. Sunday, being a kind-hearted individual, was more than willing to lend his support.

In recognition of Amb. Sunday's numerous contributions to humanity, Pastor Edogiawerie announced that the Edo State Branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society wished to decorate him as one of the organization's Associate Members.

 The ceremony would take place during the official opening of the 2025 Annual First Aid, Disaster Management, and Leadership Training Camp. Amb. Sunday was overwhelmed with gratitude, feeling honored to be recognized by an organization he admired.

As the visit came to a close, Pastor Edogiawerie expressed his appreciation for Amb. Sunday's time and reiterated the Red Cross's commitment to working together to make a positive impact in the lives of those in need. Amb. Sunday, in response, pledged his continued support for the Red Cross's initiatives and looked forward to working closely with the organization.

In his response, Amb. Sunday said, "I am humbled and honored to be recognized by the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Edo State Branch. 

" I am a member and patron of numerous humanitarian organization already,but for the Red Cross,I won't decline".

"Currently, there are about 150 persons on our pay roll that are being assisted ,some from my community, while others are aged women, pregnant and lactating mothers among others.'For as long as live',I will continue to assist the needy".

According to him,"I have always believed in the importance of humanitarian work and being on the side of humanity. I am committed to continuing my support for the Red Cross's initiatives and look forward to working closely with the organization to make a positive impact in the lives of those in need". 

He thanked the Red Cross  for the recognition, as he is eagerly awaiting to be decorated as an Associate Member of the humanitarian society.

Gov. Okpebholo Gifts Buses to Winning Schools, Showers Cash on Exceptional Students

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State celebrated Children's Day by gifting two Hiace buses to the winning schools in the Governor's Cup 2025, a testament to his administration's commitment to supporting education and youth development. 

The buses were awarded to Ogbe Secondary School, the winning male team, and Idia College, Benin City, the winning female team, in recognition of their outstanding performance in the tournament.

In addition to the buses, the Governor showered cash prizes on exceptional students who excelled in national competitions. 

Two students from Itohan Girl's Grammar School, who represented Edo State in the NDDC Quiz Challenge and emerged second nationally, were awarded N5 million each.

The Governor also promised to sponsor the winners abroad in future competitions, highlighting his dedication to celebrating excellence beyond Nigeria's borders.

During the celebration, Governor Okpebholo warned students against cultism, emphasizing the importance of nurturing their potential and avoiding harmful activities. 

He reaffirmed his administration's zero-tolerance stance on cultism in schools and pledged to provide resources and support to empower students and create safer learning environments.

The Governor's Cup 2025 finals were a highlight of the celebration, showcasing the athletic prowess of secondary school students across Edo State. Idia College, Benin City, emerged victorious in the female category, while Ogbe Secondary School won the male category.

Governor Okpebholo emphasized that children are precious assets whose dreams hold the key to a brighter future for Edo State.

Okpebholo Launches Repair Works on Auchi-Igarra-Ibillo Federal Road to Boost Economic Growth

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has initiated comprehensive repair works on over 45 damaged sections of the Auchi-Igarra-Ibillo Federal road. This move aims to revitalize economic activities in towns and villages within Akoko Edo Local Government Area.

The decision comes on the heels of the state's completion of the Ikiran-Oke Ikakhumoh road construction project in the same local government area.

The Auchi-Igarra-Ibillo road, a vital link between Edo, Kogi, and Ondo states, has been in a deplorable condition, affecting the transportation of goods and services.

Residents, who rely heavily on quarry and cassava businesses, have long complained about the difficulties in transporting their products to markets due to the road's poor condition. This has resulted in increased transportation costs and reduced economic activity.

The project's contractor, Mr. Bajwa Hammed, has assured the people of Akoko Edo that all damaged sections of the road will be thoroughly rehabilitated to meet the highest standards. 

"We will deliver a road that meets the governor's expectations, ensuring safe passage for people and vehicles," he stated.

A New Dawn: Edo State House of Assembly Service Commission Takes Historic Step 

Habiba SamThe Edo State House of Assembly Service Commission's inaugural plenary session, held on May 15, 2025, in Benin City, marked a significant milestone in the commission's administrative evolution. The session, convened under the leadership of Commission Chairman Hon. (Sir) Ezehi MD Igbas, was attended by members, staff, the press, and the public, all eager to witness the dawn of a new era of transparency, inclusiveness, and reform.

Hon. Igbas welcomed members to the session and announced a policy shift, introducing monthly plenary meetings to deliberate on committee reports, petitions, staff development issues, and policy recommendations. He emphasized the commission's legal authority to establish investigative and advisory committees and underscored the importance of an open-door policy as a bedrock of transparency and good governance.

The plenary addressed the cases of several staff members who were wrongfully dismissed or retired due to alleged political victimization. The commission adopted committee recommendations for their reinstatement, payment of arrears, and promotion. Specifically, the cases of Mr. J. Ohiokhuobo, Mr. S. Haruna, Mrs. Ego Aguinede, and Mrs. Marian Edoror were highlighted, and the commission ordered their reinstatement and payment of arrears.

The commission also addressed cases of promotion disputes and appointment irregularities. Mr. Bello Saheed's case was resolved, with his next promotion scheduled for June 1, 2026. Another case involved Mr. Ebegue Igho-Osagie, who presented two different appointment letters; the commission nullified the second appointment and upheld the first.

The Tenders Board Committee presented a comprehensive procurement and maintenance report, detailing approved projects aimed at improving staff accommodation and operational efficiency. These projects included roof replacements, procurement of solar-powered infrastructure, and equipment upgrades.

The commission endorsed the reinstatement, full promotion, and payment of salary arrears for Mr. Micheal O. Amaize, Mr. Kadiri A. Ezelomeh, and Mr. Roland E. Eigbe, members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) who were dismissed due to union activities. Each individual was also awarded N500,000 in damages and N50,000 in general costs.

The commission tackled issues of absenteeism and lateness, implementing disciplinary measures and recommending comprehensive staff training. A visitation exercise to departments in the legislative quarters revealed the need for systemic reform and proper documentation.

The Adhoc-disciplinary committee investigated petitions against the former secretary, Bar. Osahon Newton Ahunwan, and ordered him to refund 10% of the misappropriated N18 million and send an apology letter to the commission. His transfer to another ministry was also approved.In his closing address, Hon. (Sir) Ezehi Igbas reaffirmed the commission's commitment to fairness, discipline, and reform. He emphasized that the commission's mandate was to protect all staff who adhered to the rules, while those who flouted the laws would face consequences.

The first plenary session of the Edo State House of Assembly Service Commission marked a bold step towards institutional reform, justice, and accountability. The commission's decisions demonstrated a new era of transparency and fairness, where service would guide the commission's hand.

Civil Society Organization Joins Governor Okpebholo's Anti-Cultism War In Edo

The Edo Civil Society Organization has thrown its weight behind Governor Monday Okpebholo's administration in the fight against cultism and cult-related matters in Edo State. 

Led by its Coordinator General, Comrade Omobude Agho, the group staged a peaceful protest to Government House in Benin City to show solidarity with the government's efforts.

The protesters, who were received by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Fred Itua, expressed their support for the government's actions against cultism.

 Agho commended Governor Okpebholo for his efforts so far and expressed the group's readiness to support the government in ensuring that cultism becomes a thing of the past in the state.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, thanked the group for the peaceful protest and noted that it would create a platform for engagement that would lead to deliberation and solution to the issues. Ohonbamu also expressed gratitude to the group for supporting the governor's administration in the fight against cultism and cult-related matters.

The Edo State government's fight against cultism is gaining momentum, and with the support of stakeholders like the Civil Society Organization, it is expected that the state will make significant progress in addressing the issue. 

The group's efforts to enlighten the people on the anti-cultism law will help to ensure that no one claims ignorance of the law.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication also highlighted the governor's efforts to develop the state infrastructure, including the construction of flyovers. This development is seen as a positive step towards improving the lives of the people of Edo State.

2024 National Sports Festival: Edo Sports Chairman Expresses Confidence in Team's Preparation

Led by the executive chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, Team Edo made a striking impression with an historic march past at the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta, Ogun State. 

The ceremony commenced at the weekend with a spectacular opening ceremony presided over by Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.

At the ceremony, which featured a dazzling display of dance, music, calisthenics, and fireworks, making it one of the most impressive opening ceremonies in the festival's history, Enabulele expressed confidence in Team Edo's preparation.

He highlighted the unwavering support of Governor Monday Okpebholo, noting that the team's rousing reception during the colorful display was a strong indication of its readiness to compete.

Afrobeat sensation, Davido electrified the stadium with a thrilling performance, getting the crowd on their feet. 

The festival features over 10,000 athletes from all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and the IJA team, competing in 33 sports.

The 2024 National Sports Festival is a celebration not just of sporting excellence but also of the resilient spirit of the Nigerian people. Athletes, officials, and fans alike look forward to exciting competitions across multiple venues.

Edo State Government and Association of Chinese Community Partner to Enhance Healthcare, Education, and Economic Empowerment

The Edo State Government has announced a partnership with the Association of Chinese Community to improve healthcare, education, and economic empowerment in the state.

 This collaboration was announced during a charity donation ceremony at the Government House in Benin, where the Association of Chinese Community donated health and education supplies to the people of Edo State.

The Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, expressed gratitude to the Association of Chinese Community for their philanthropic spirit and commitment to giving back to the community.

 She stated that the partnership aligns with the Edo State Government's commitment to community development and will focus on key areas such as health, education, and empowerment.

The partnership will prioritize initiatives that improve access to medical care, promote healthy living, and support educational programs that enhance outcomes for youths in rural areas. The empowerment aspect aims to equip individuals with skills and knowledge to become self-sufficient.

The Chairperson of the Association of Chinese Community, Mrs. Nazel Xin, expressed gratitude to the Edo State Government for the confidence reposed in them over the years. 

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, praised the Association of Chinese Community for their gesture, stating that it reflects their commitment to the development of the community in which they operate.

Akwa Ibom Son, Jason Utitofon Sets to Become First Nigerian-Born Mayor of the Borough, UK

Councillor Jason Utitofon Jackson, the current Deputy Mayor of Islington, is poised to make history as the first Nigerian-born Mayor of the borough since the office was established in 1900. Born in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, Cllr Jackson moved to the United Kingdom as a teenager and has since built an impressive record of public service, community leadership, and social impact.

He began his early education in Nigeria, attending primary school and later Holy Family College (HOFACO) in Abak, Akwa Ibom State, before relocating to the UK to continue his studies. A naturally gifted speaker, he gained national recognition in Nigeria as the country’s youngest preacher at the age of six. His deep Christian faith, instilled from childhood, continues to guide his values and leadership style.

Elected as a councillor in 2022, he quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed Chair of Islington’s Homes and Communities Committee in 2023. In this role, he led ground-breaking work in housing equity, community wellbeing, and inclusive governance. One of his most notable achievements was initiating a £1.6 million mental health programme specifically for young Black men, a nationally recognised and award-nominated initiative that set a new benchmark for culturally responsive services in the UK.

In just three years, Cllr Jackson has gone from first-time councillor to the borough’s highest civic office, a clear testament to his integrity, vision, and strong grassroots connection to the community.

After arriving in the UK, he furthered his education and attended London Metropolitan University, where he was elected President of the Students' Union. There, he championed racial equity, student advocacy, and social justice not just in the UK, but also across the African continent. This period laid the foundation for what has become a lifelong dedication to advocacy and empowerment.

Cllr Jackson currently serves as co-founder of The Black Policy Institute (TBPI), a national think tank focused on elevating Black British and African perspectives in public policy, civic participation, and community development. His work bridges personal experience with strategic insight giving voice to communities often excluded from key decision-making processes.

He holds a degree in Business Law and Media Studies, as well as a Master’s in Big Data in Culture and Society from King’s College London. In addition to his public service, he is a business consultant and social entrepreneur with interests spanning real estate, agriculture, education, and ethical AI leveraging technology for social good and development.

Cllr Jackson is happily married and a proud father of three sons, often describing his family as his greatest motivation.

"My family is my anchor," he said. "My sons remind me daily why I must lead with faith, purpose, and a sense of responsibility to uplift others. Becoming Islington’s first Nigerian-born Mayor is more than a personal honour — it is a symbol of what is possible when one’s heritage inspires service, and leadership reflects the community it represents."

As Mayor, Cllr Jackson plans to focus on issues that reflect his life’s journey: social equity, youth empowerment, mental health, and inclusive innovation. His leadership will aim to increase access, foster representation, and ensure that no one is left behind in the development process.

Edo State Assembly Commission Prioritizes Workers' Welfare

The Edo State House of Assembly Service Commission is committed to enhancing the working environment and welfare of its staff. 

Chairman Hon. Ezehi Igbas made this assurance during a familiarization tour of the legislative body, emphasizing that the commission will address staff challenges and provide necessary facilities to boost morale. 

The commission aims to create a conducive working environment that fosters productivity and efficiency.

Hon. Igbas assured staff that their welfare is a top priority, with consistent promotions and benefits.

The commission has ruled out retrenchment, focusing on supporting workers instead.Staff demanded improved packages, citing inadequate facilities and unfavorable working conditions.

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) called for a better working relationship between the commission and assembly workers.

In a related development, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo recently increased the minimum wage for state workers from N70,000 to N75,000, demonstrating the government's commitment to improving workers' lives. 

This move is part of broader efforts to enhance the standard of living for Edo State residents.

Edo State Government On Kidnappers Toes: Demolishes Property Linked To Notorious Group

The Edo State Task Force has taken decisive action against a notorious kidnapping gang by demolishing a property on College Road, Aduwawa, Benin City, linked to the group. 

The property belonged to the sister of Osamede Asemota, a key leader of the gang, who was arrested and confessed to his involvement in kidnapping activities.

Asemota revealed that the gang had been responsible for several kidnappings in the Aduwawa, Eyan, and Auchi Bypass axis of Benin City. Another suspect, Michael Tare, was also arrested in connection with the kidnapping. 

The gang had demanded a ransom of N8 million from their victim, later demanding an additional N3 million.

The demolition of the property serves as a warning to those involved in criminal activities in the state.

 The Edo State Government's efforts to combat insecurity have yielded positive results, with several kidnappers and other criminals being arrested and brought to justice. 

The government is expected to maintain its momentum in the fight against insecurity.

New Leadership in Omandino Community: The Installation of Pa Edemadiden as Olare-Aja

The Omandino Community in Delta State has welcomed a new leader with the installation of Pa Edemadiden as the Olare-Aja, or the eldest man. The ceremony, which drew a large crowd of well-wishers from across the Warri kingdom, took place at the Nenuwa Hall in Omandino.

In his acceptance speech, Pa Edemadiden expressed his gratitude to the Almighty God for this honor, acknowledging that it was only through divine providence that he was able to attain this esteemed position.

 He also thanked the members of the Omandino Community for entrusting him with this responsibility and appreciated the guests who attended the ceremony from various communities.

Pa Edemadiden emphasized the importance of collective responsibility and stewardship, urging everyone to work together to develop the community and build a brighter future. He pledged to uphold fairness and justice in his role, promising not to show favoritism or bias.

Pa Edemadiden's installation comes shortly after the passing of the previous Olare-Aja,at the age of 98 years.Elder Omasan Edukugho, who left a legacy of wisdom and leadership. As the new Olare-Aja, Pa Edemadiden is poised to lead the community with wisdom and integrity.

Edo Governor Seeks Arrest of Neo Black Movement President Over Alleged Forgery and Criminal Conduct

The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Services, seeking the immediate arrest and prosecution of Olorogun Ese Kakor, President of the Neo Black Movement (NBM) of Africa.

 The Governor accuses Kakor of forging official state government documents, which falsely claimed to authorize him to provide assistance to schools in Edo South Senatorial District.

Governor Okpebholo described the act as fraudulent and a direct assault on the integrity of the state's administrative processes. He alleged that the forgery was carried out in connivance with certain low-level civil servants within the state bureaucracy, who have already been identified and taken into custody.

The Governor vowed that all those found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law. He also revealed that the land title on which the NBM headquarters was erected in Edo State has been revoked, citing the organization's alleged involvement in violent crimes and unlawful activities within the state.

Governor Okpebholo urged the Nigeria Police Force and the DSS to intensify their efforts in curbing the operations of groups allegedly involved in criminality and to ensure that those responsible for these acts are brought to justice.

Edo NUJ  Celebrates Bob Marley Day with Reggae Night Extravaganza

The Posthumous Award on chief Bankole Balogun 

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Edo State Council hosted a vibrant Reggae Night Extravaganza to commemorate Bob Marley Day, combining entertainment with recognition for excellence in journalism.

 The event, held in Benin City, drew journalists, media stakeholders, and government dignitaries from across the state.

The NUJ Edo State Council Chairman, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, described the gathering as a unique opportunity for journalists to unwind and honor colleagues who have distinguished themselves in the field. 

He emphasized the importance of journalistic ethics, urging media professionals to ensure balance and fairness in their reporting.

The event featured the posthumous award of the late Mr. Bankole Balogun, a pioneer in Nigerian broadcasting, for his groundbreaking contributions to investigative journalism and mentorship of younger journalists. 

The award was accepted by his son, Barrister Oladele Bankole Balogun, who announced plans to establish a legacy project in his father's name.

The event also recognized Mr. Francis Onoiribholo, the oldest practicing journalist in Edo State, with a career spanning over 50 years. He expressed gratitude to the NUJ for the honor and credited his journey in journalism to Pius Agun, Executive Director of Publications at the Observer Group of Newspapers.

Omadino Community Install Edemadiden  As Olare -aja

Pa Oruru Edemadiden has been installed as the new Olare aja ti Omadino, (Eldest man ),Oba - Ogbolomo of Omadino Community, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The event which witnessed a large turn out of well wishers from Warri kingdom of during the weekend   took place at Nenuwa Hall, Omadino.

In his acceptance speech, Pa Edemadiden thanked the Almighty God who made it possible for him to be the Olare aja saying it was only God that made it possible while he lauded the members of Omadino Community who found him worthy of such an exalted stool.

Pa Edemadiden also appreciated all who took time out from their busy schedules to witness the occasion from different communities which includes Obodo community, Ughoton, Jaghala and Orere -luba amongst others.

According to him, " God Almighty the creator of heaven earth is the one who has made it possible for him to become the Olare aja who also  made this event possible" 

He said, he has no enemy and also has no knowledge of him being an enemy to anyone. He said everyone is meant to take responsibility and be in charge  of anything entrusted in his care by  taking care of such  their possession 

He  enjoined everyone to join hands together with him to develop the community and build a better future.

He promised to be fair to everyone and ensure that justice is carried out at all times in the process of carrying out his responsibilities as the eldest man in the community and would not play to the gallery by exhibiting any form of favouritism.

Pa Edemadiden installation as the Olare aja came few weeks after the burial ceremony of the late Olare aja, Elder Omasan  Edukugho who passed on few months ago at the ripe age of 98 years.

Edo Government  Rolls Out  Free Vaccination  Exercise For Children

The Edo State Government has launched a free vaccination exercise for children aged 0-5 years in commemoration of African Vaccination Week. 

The initiative, held in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), and the Institute of Child Health (ICH), UNIBEN/UBTH, aims to improve immunization coverage and protect children from life-threatening diseases.

The Coordinator Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, emphasized the importance of vaccination in maintaining children's health. She noted that immunization ensures children are healthy, and healthy children build a healthy nation. 

Mrs. Anani also advocated for breastfeeding, citing its role in protecting children from diseases and infections.

The Edo State Government's immunization drive demonstrates its commitment to improving healthcare outcomes for its citizens. 

By partnering with international organizations like WHO and UNICEF, the government aims to reduce the prevalence of vaccine-preventable diseases in the state.

The State Coordinator of WHO, Dr. Nora Eyo, urged all mothers to take advantage of the opportunity to vaccinate their children.

The Director of Disease Control and Immunization, EDSPHCDA, Dr. Eseigbe Efeomon, commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his passion for maternal and child health, citing the Governor's health reforms, including the renovation and staffing of Primary Health Care centers.

The initiative which is expected to have a  positive impact on reducing the prevalence of vaccine-preventable diseases in Edo State,has the  following vaccines and supplements available- Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV)- *BCG, Penta, Measles,Yellow Fever, MenA and Vitamin A supplements to support eye health.
