The University of Benin is set to launch a massive tree planting campaign, aiming to plant 10,000 trees on its campus and beyond, as part of its efforts to combat climate change.

This initiative is a key component of the university's strategic plan to promote environmental sustainability and mitigate the effects of climate change.

According to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, the tree planting campaign is part of his five-point agenda for the institution, which includes sustaining and advancing the university's academic profile, promoting capacity building and vocational training, mainstreaming staff and student welfare, improving infrastructure, and promoting environmental friendliness.

Prof. Omoregie emphasized the importance of environmental conservation, noting that the absence of trees in Benin City, despite being located in a rainforest region, is a pressing concern. He highlighted the numerous benefits of tree planting, including environmental conservation, health benefits, climate change remediation, and more.

The Vice Chancellor assured the leadership of the Edo State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), who paid him a courtesy visit, that the university is committed to working collaboratively with stakeholders to promote a better and more vibrant society.

Earlier, the NUJ chairman, Dr. Festus Alenkhe, congratulated Prof. Omoregie on his appointment and commended the university's progress under his leadership.

Dr. Alenkhe assured the Vice Chancellor of the union's unwavering support for his five-point agenda and expressed confidence in the university's ability to achieve its goals.
