In a significant stride towards bolstering Nigeria's agricultural landscape and fostering peace within rural communities, the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project recently convened a pivotal validation meeting in Benin City. The objective was clear: to secure unanimous endorsement for its meticulously developed Stakeholders Engagement Document Plan – a comprehensive strategy designed to guide collaborative efforts in the nation's livestock sector.

The validation gathering brought together a diverse and influential assembly of participants, reflecting the multifaceted nature of Nigeria's livestock ecosystem. Representatives from prominent bodies such as the Edo State Cattle Rearers Miyetti Allah, the Poultry Farmers Association, and the Veterinary Doctors Association were present. 

Their ranks were swelled by voices from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), respected Traditional Institutions, and critical government ministries including the Ministry of Livestock, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Budget and Statistics. This broad coalition collectively affirmed and validated the engagement document, signifying a shared commitment to its principles and proposed actions.

The L-PRES initiative itself is a collaborative powerhouse, generously sponsored by the federal government of Nigeria in conjunction with the World Bank. Its ambitious scope aims to inject vitality into the livestock sector of strategically selected states across the nation. 

These chosen states – Sokoto, Adamawa, Ondo, Taraba, Kogi, Plateau, Edo, and Delta – span Nigeria's six geopolitical zones, encompassing the South-West, North-West, North-East, North-Central, South-South, and South-East. Their selection was not arbitrary but based on rigorous criteria, considering each state's value chain potential and comparative advantage within the livestock industry, alongside robust sub-sector growth prospects.

During the validation meeting, Consultant Ebuke Olajhite Eseiri articulated the project's overarching vision with clarity and precision. He emphasized that the fundamental goal of the L-PRES project is twofold: primarily, to significantly enhance the productivity and commercial viability of targeted livestock production systems, thereby boosting economic opportunities for countless Nigerians. Secondly, and equally crucial, it seeks to fortify the resilience of livelihoods frequently jeopardized by the persistent challenges of farmer-herder conflicts, aiming to create sustainable peace and coexistence.

Eseiri further underscored the immediate next steps for the newly validated document, confirming that it would undergo official submission to all relevant authorities. Following this crucial administrative phase, the plan is slated for widespread publication and distribution across Nigeria, ensuring its accessibility and promoting broad awareness among all affected parties.

 He issued a direct appeal to the representatives of the various stakeholder groups present, urging them to return to their respective associations and conscientiously disseminate the document's content to their members. 

This "step-down" approach, he explained, is vital for ensuring that all stakeholders gain a comprehensive understanding of the operational framework and can effectively contribute to its successful implementation

In interviews conducted shortly after the meeting concluded, sentiments of optimism and appreciation were prevalent. Dr. Bathelomew Okoudu, President of CONGO, lauded the concerted efforts of both the Federal Government and the World Bank for their proactive approach in engaging stakeholders. 

He specifically praised the initiative's focus on collaboratively devising enduring solutions to the farmer-herder crisis, highlighting its potential to transform long-standing conflicts into pathways for mutual benefit. Dr. Okoudu expressed a profound conviction that if the recommendations embedded within the document are meticulously implemented, the farmer-herder crisis could indeed become a relic of the past.

Echoing these positive sentiments, Alhaji Mohammed SDSAL, the esteemed leader of the Fulaani-Saraki community in Edo State, commended the project's vision. He voiced his strong belief that the document, once fully operationalized, holds the key to resolving the deeply rooted and prolonged conflicts that have plagued communities for too long.

A point of concern, however, was raised earlier in the event by Dr. Osas Osaigie, who attended alongside a World Bank monitoring team. Dr. Osaigie drew attention to a critical shortage of veterinary doctors within Edo State. 

This scarcity, she explained, significantly hampers the effective monitoring and regulation of abattoirs throughout the state, posing potential risks to public health and animal welfare. She passionately appealed to the appropriate authorities to address this pressing issue, stressing that resolving the shortage of veterinary professionals is indispensable for the full realization of the L-PRES project's objectives in the state.

 Aikhionbare asserts that these malicious claims are nothing more than a calculated attempt to settle personal scores and gain cheap notoriety at his expense.

From his Canadian base, Aikhionbare released a powerful statement, detailing the unsettling chain of events. 

He recounted receiving a distressing phone call from his sister just days prior, informing him that the Edo State government's Anti-Cultism Committee had falsely implicated him in a recent homicide in Benin City.

 The committee, he explained, had sensationally alleged that he was not only the financier but also the mastermind behind the heinous crime, purportedly providing a sum of one million naira (N1,000,000) for its execution. 

This accusation, he stressed, comes despite his undeniable physical absence from Nigeria at the time of the alleged incident. 

Aikhionbare unequivocally dismissed these allegations as utterly baseless, untrue, and entirely devoid of merit, expressing profound shock at their fabrication.

The depth of his distress was further compounded by the committee's heavy-handed tactics, including the unwarranted sealing of his uncle's home. 

This action, Aikhionbare explained, was based on the erroneous belief that he had resided there before his move abroad—a notion he firmly refuted, clarifying that he has never lived at that address and has only visited on a handful of occasions. 

The fallout from this situation, he noted, has caused immense anguish not only to himself but also to his entire family, who have been thrown into turmoil by the unwarranted scrutiny.

The circulation of his name across various social media platforms, falsely linking him to this brutal crime, represents a blatant and insidious effort to unjustly tarnish his hard-earned reputation and character.

 He revealed that his family members and he have been inundated with calls from concerned friends and associates who encountered the fabricated news online, highlighting the far-reaching impact of these defamatory actions.

Aikhionbare’s statement was clear and uncompromising: he declared categorically that he had no involvement, whether direct or indirect, in the said killing or any other act of violence.

 He underscored his commitment to justice by confirming that he has already engaged legal counsel, assuring everyone that those responsible for tarnishing his image in this matter will ultimately face their reckoning in a court of law, where they will be compelled to substantiate their spurious allegations.

To further bolster his defense, Aikhionbare provided compelling evidence confirming his departure from Nigeria long before the current administration took office, thereby establishing his temporal and geographical distance from the alleged crime.

 He also emphasized his pristine record, asserting that he has no prior criminal history. "I will do everything within the ambit of the Law to defend my reputation and my family name," he declared with resolute determination.

The air in the Edo State APC Secretariat was buzzing, a mix of relief and renewed purpose, as Chief Emperor Jarret Tenebe, the State Chairman, strode to the podium. "Friends, family, patriots," he began, his voice resonant with gratitude, "today, we gather not just as politicians, but as architects of democracy. The past few days, culminating in the seamless conclusion of our Ward Congresses across all 192 wards, have truly been a watershed moment for Edo State."

He spoke of the APC's immense responsibility as Africa's largest political party – a duty to embody the very democracy they championed. 

He proudly declared that the recent congresses were a testament to this commitment. The National Working Committee's guidelines, he asserted, had been followed to the letter, resulting in a process free from rancor, disharmony, or division. "This," he beamed, "is internal democracy in its purest form!"

His gaze then swept across the room, settling on the newly elected Ward Executives. "To you," he said, his voice softening with encouragement, "I extend my warmest congratulations. But know this: your emergence isn't just a victory; it's a sacred call to greater service."

He reminded them that the ward was the true bedrock of their political might, the closest link to the grassroots, to the voters who ultimately held the power. Their mission, he explained, was clear: to deepen party structures, mobilize communities, and ensure every Edo citizen understood and embraced the APC's vision. In a renewed commitment to safeguard community well-being and shield residents from hazardous commodities, the Nigerian Federal Government, spearheaded by the Minister of Health, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, in conjunction with the Edo State Administration and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has initiated the formation of national enforcement teams to combat the proliferation of illegal substances, imitation medications, and substandard processed edibles throughout the nation.

Aligned with its SHINE Agenda, the Edo State Government has embraced this initiative to bolster regulatory enforcement and adherence to public health benchmarks. Consequently, the State officially inaugurated its specialized Task Force dedicated to addressing Counterfeit and Forged Pharmaceuticals and Unsafe Processed Foods, aiming to guarantee the security and health of its populace.

Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhile, who assumed the chairmanship of the Edo State Task Force on Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Food, also serving as the Commissioner for Health, characterized the circulation of harmful drugs and unhealthy foodstuffs as a grave danger to human existence.

He highlighted that this pervasive issue insidiously claims lives, undermines the healthcare system, erodes public confidence, and disproportionately impacts the impoverished and vulnerable segments of society.

Dr. Oshiomhole emphasized that the inauguration was more than a ceremonial occasion; it represented a direct call to action to eradicate all forms of health-endangering substances within the State.

 He vowed that the task force would operate with integrity, professionalism, and transparency, expressing his readiness to collaborate with pertinent agencies, manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and the judicial system to dismantle networks profiting from human suffering.

He also extended gratitude to both the Federal and Edo State Governments for their steadfast support in the ongoing battle against counterfeit drugs and illicit products.

Providing insights on behalf of NAFDAC’s Director-General, Professor Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, the NAFDAC South-South Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Oligbu Chukwuma Philip, outlined the enforcement initiative and its core objectives.

He described the task force as a vital regulatory mechanism designed to reinforce enforcement, coordinate intelligence gathering, sustain public education, and foster community involvement to protect public health.

Additionally, the Edo State NAFDAC Coordinator, Mrs. Esther Itua, remarked that the fight against fake drugs and substandard processed foods cannot be waged by NAFDAC alone.

She expressed confidence that with the combined efforts of the newly established task force, substantial advancements could be made in safeguarding the health and safety of Edo State citizens.

A key highlight of the event was the official swearing-in of the members of the Task Force on Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods, conducted by NAFDAC’s Legal Officer for Investigation and Enforcement, Barrister Adumen Jumbo Washington, Esq.

Edo North, especially in the Akoko-Edo area where kidnappings have become a sickening daily norm. It's so bad that the local government and traditional rulers have had to put a curfew in place from 9 PM to 6 AM, just to try and stem the tide.

This past week alone saw two more horrifying incidents. First, on February 8th, daring kidnappers stormed the Makeke Primary Health Centre. 

They snatched Tope Oriloye, a secondary school student, and Samuel Ilesanmi, who was just trying to get help for his son. The audacity! Then, in a separate but equally terrifying operation, Inspector Segun Obanowa, his wife, and daughter were abducted right from their home in Auchi.

 His wife was later released with the impossible task of finding a N100 million ransom for her husband and daughter.

Bode Ekundayo, the National Coordinator for the Movement for the Advancement of Akoko Edo People, confirmed that the kidnappers are already demanding a staggering N100 million for Tope and Samuel. He pointed out this chilling new trend of starting negotiations with such an exorbitant amount.

It's clear Akoko-Edo is under siege. Hunters and vigilantes are out there, combing the wilderness to no avail. 

This isn't just an isolated incident; it's an incessant, escalating crisis, with fears that armed groups from neighboring states are exploiting the vast wilderness of Akoko Edo as an entry point. 

The Edo State government and local authorities have to step up and rescue these communities from this terrifying onslaught. 

The Edo State Police Command's PPRO, Eno Ikoedem, sadly confirmed these relentless incidents.

Emperor Jarret Tenebe, the formidable Chairman of the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC), recently laid out his vision for the party's future and sharply addressed criticisms regarding the perceived collapse of opposition parties into the APC during a media chat with journalists recently.

Far from being concerned about potential threats to democracy, Tenebe declared, "It is not the duty of the ruling party to protect the opposition. It is the responsibility of the opposition to be formidable." 

He made it unequivocally clear that he would welcome even the most widespread defections, stating, "If anyone wants to associate with us, we will accept them. I am not bothered even if all political parties collapse into the APC. If all journalists and even INEC collapse into APC, I will be happy."

Tenebe dismissed suggestions of coercion or inducement in these defections, pointing to high-profile figures like the Governor of Bayelsa State joining the APC in his second term, questioning what could possibly be offered to induce such a move. He attributes this surge in membership to a growing recognition of President Tinubu's clear vision for the nation.

Addressing internal party matters, Tenebe emphasized that the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpeholo, is the true leader of the party in the state. He strongly refuted any claims of discord with Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, stating their only past disagreement was during the primaries where he insisted on doing "the right thing." He insists those differences are long behind them, affirming, "There are absolutely no cracks on the wall." With his confirmation as substantive chairman on the horizon, Tenebe is confident the party won't change a "winning team."

On the integration of new members, Tenebe was equally resolute. He argued against shutting out those who previously opposed the party but have since "seen reason" to join, asserting it would be unwise to reject them.

 He championed Governor Okpeholo's inclusive approach, highlighting his non-controversial nature and ability to unite the state, which, according to Tenebe, speeds up governance by avoiding "paying back perceived enemies." He even recounted engaging with a former critic, a blogger named Eranomigo, as proof of their open-door policy, seeing it as fostering unity.

Looking ahead to the 2027 presidential election, Tenebe boldly reiterated the party's commitment to delivering 3.5 million votes for President Tinubu from Edo State, a number he believes can even be surpassed. 

He outlined ambitious plans, including imminent defections of Labour Party and PDP LGA chairmen, and efforts to mobilize registered Edo voters living outside the state, even arranging logistics for their return. 

Tenebe was quick to clarify that such arrangements are "logistics and mobilisation," not "vote-buying." He concluded by linking a strong vote count to increased ministerial slots and key appointments for Edo State, asserting that the APC is the only party actively mobilizing for voter registration.

Finally, Tenebe tackled concerns about national hardship, acknowledging "hunger and hardship" but framing it as a matter of "perspective." He optimistically claimed that prices of goods are declining and that President Tinubu is actively addressing long-standing security challenges, which he traces back to past policies rather than the current administration.

The air inside St. Paul's Catholic Church in Benin City was filled with a quiet reverence, a stark contrast to the usual hustle and bustle of newsrooms. Members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) gathered, their hearts full of gratitude and anticipation for their newly elected executive council.

Rev. Father Godwin Ibeh, the assistant parish priest, stood before them, his voice calm yet impactful. He looked at the faces of these dedicated women, ready to lead, and shared a message straight from the heart of the gospel. 

"This message," he began, "as taught us, is to seek God in humility and with a pure heart." He reminded them that their new roles, their election into the exco, were not just positions of power but "a call to service." And that service, he emphasized,"will be by humility, which builds you up." 

Father Ibeh spoke of how God never overlooks a humble leader, referencing the scriptures: "Philippians tells us that .He exalts the humble. You see that practically in the life of Christ Himself; He humbled himself and was elevated." 

He urged them, as leaders aspiring to be fruitful, successful, and joyful, to "live in humility, and seek God and serve with a pure heart, and you will never be disappointed."

His prayer for them was simple yet profound,that God gives you grace to practice these virtues to make remarkable impact and you reap the fruits of your labor as you serve through Christ Our Lord. Amen."

Following the priest's inspiring words, the newly elected Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade, Habiba Aniekan Sam,took her stand. Her voice resonated with conviction as she highlighted the importance of their collective prayer, thanking God for the peaceful transition of power. 

"With God, all things are possible," she declared, her eyes shining with determination. She then laid out her vision to elevate the association, speaking of her plans to bridge gaps by visiting various chapters. 

"It’s about bringing our women together," she explained, "to let them know that their collective ideas and connections are channels to take this association to greater heights. There’s no need for rancor, which will not yield any good." 

Her focus was clear: fostering unity, engaging in vital health education, and encouraging wellness, because "to be healthy is key to serving efficiently."

Other seasoned leaders also seized the moment to offer their wisdom. They praised the new exco for starting with a strong foundation, advising them to continue "putting God first to guide their activities." 

Their counsel echoed the Chairperson's sentiment, urging the new team to prioritize unity among members and to actively seek ways to "make an impact in the lives of the less privileged," ensuring that "the positive impact of society" reaches those who need it most.
