The Benin Recreation Club, a storied institution in the heart of Benin City, has welcomed a new member into its fold. 

Comrade Festus Alenkhe, NUJ Edo Chairman, has been inducted into Benin Recreation Club, a prestigious club in Edo State comprising prominent elites from various professions, aimed at promoting members' well-being.

Alenkhe, who has won many awards for his journalistic skills and  commendation  for repositioning the union, was honored with the privilege of taking a bow during the screening exercise, presided over by Venerable Nosayaba Edokpolor.marking the beginning of his membership. 

Venerable Edokpolor, in his remarks, praised Comrade Alenkhe's impeccable character, describing him as a team player who is eager to contribute to the growth and development of the club.

Established in 1933, the Benin Recreation Club has a rich history of providing a haven for its members to relax, socialize, and engage in recreational activities. 

Venerable Edokpolor emphasized the importance of discipline within the club, warning that any member found engaging in illicit activities would face sanctions.

In his response, Comrade Alenkhe expressed his gratitude to the club's leadership and members for accepting him into their fold. 

He stated that joining the club was a deliberate effort to prioritize relaxation and recreation, which he believes is essential for maintaining a sound mind and promoting development. 

Comrade Alenkhe pledged to abide by the club's constitution and contribute to its continued growth and success.

Habiba Sam The Edo State House of Assembly's Ad-Hoc Committee, established to investigate the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) and Radisson Hotel, has taken a significant step in its probe by inviting key stakeholders and former government officials to appear before it. 

Former Governor Godwin Obaseki, who initiated the MOWAA project, is among those summoned to provide insights into the funding and management of the project.

Obaseki is expected to shed light on the financial dealings of the Radisson Hotel project, which has been shrouded in controversy. 

The Committee is also interested in understanding the role played by the former Governor in the project's execution and the financial implications thereof.

In addition to Obaseki, other notable individuals have been invited to appear before the Committee. They include Philip Iheanacho, Director of MOWAA; Osarodion Ogie, former Secretary to the State Government; Joseph Eboigbe, former Edo Finance Commissioner; Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, former Attorney General of Edo State; and several other prominent individuals connected to the project.

The Committee has scheduled the appearances for Thursday, December 4, 2025, and has emphasized the importance of their attendance. 

The invitation is part of the Committee's efforts to gather evidence and insights into the MOWAA and Radisson Hotel projects, and to determine whether due process was followed in their execution.

The investigation aims to provide clarity on the financial dealings and management of the projects, and to identify any wrongdoing or irregularities that may have occurred.

Habiba Sam The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has launched the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign observed annually from November 25th to December 10th. This year's theme, "Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls," is particularly relevant in today's digital age.

The Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Edo State, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, highlighted the alarming statistics of online violence against women and girls. 

She noted that nearly 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced some form of online violence, and women are more likely than men to be harassed online.

The Commissioner emphasized that digital violence is real, harmful, and preventable. She appealed to lawmakers and media partners to join the ministry in creating safer digital spaces for women and girls through legislation and digital literacy.

The Edo State Government has taken significant steps to strengthen the protection of women and girls, including establishing Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) and promoting digital literacy and safety campaigns in schools and communities. 

The government remains resolute in ensuring that all women and girls are safe, both offline and online, and that perpetrators of digital violence.

The ministry has planned a series of activities to mark the 16 Days of Activism, including a road walk, statewide digital online safety campaign, social media advocacy, community-focused sensitization, and a stakeholders' conference.

The Honourable Commissioner called on all citizens to join the movement to build safer digital and physical spaces. 

She urged parents and guardians to monitor and guide children's online interactions, teachers and schools to integrate digital safety education, and technology companies and telecoms to strengthen reporting systems and protective measures.

The 16 Days of Activism Against GBV is an opportunity to raise awareness, build partnerships, and take collective action to prevent digital violence against women and girls.

The Edo State Government has scored a major victory in its fight against violent crime with the dismantling of a major kidnappers' den in Egbai community, Ovia North-East Local Government Area.

 The operation, carried out by the Edo State Special Security Squad, resulted in the arrest of two suspected kidnappers, Anthony Fedigha Ebimienwei and Luke Disemoh.

The suspects were arrested following a high-level, intelligence-driven surveillance operation. They confessed to their involvement in the abduction of one Blessing Nosa, for whose release a ransom of ₦30 million was collected. 

The duo also allegedly abducted another business person and demanded a staggering ₦500 million ransom, triggering an expanded multi-agency response and sustained tracking that culminated in their arrest.

The Coordinator of the Edo State Security Squad, Noah Idemudia, said the operation was in line with Governor Monday Okpebholo's directive to adopt offensive security tactics that prevent crime before it festers. 

Idemudia stressed that the administration's stance on criminality remains uncompromising, warning that Edo State would not be a safe haven for kidnappers or any criminal elements.

Community leaders have welcomed the government's actions, with the Okaighele (youth leader) of Egbai community, Aghaku Ihanuwaze, commending Governor Okpebholo for taking decisive steps to restore safety in the area. 

"This hideout has been a source of fear for our community," the youth leader noted. "We thank Governor Okpebholo for acting swiftly and for prioritizing the safety of our people.

The operation marks a significant milestone in Governor Okpebholo's broader security reforms, which include the reinforcement of rural surveillance, expanded community-based intelligence networks, and the strengthening of inter-agency coordination initiatives.

 The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property, saying security remains the bedrock upon which economic growth, social stability, and community development must stand.

In his welcome address at the NEC meeting held in Benin  recently, the Chairman of the NBA Benin branch, Idemudia Iredia-Osifo, commended the NBA President, Afam Osigwe, SAN, for his visionary leadership, which has significantly strengthened the association's structure and advocacy for the rule of law and citizens' rights. 

Iredia-Osifo noted that the NEC meeting was a crucial milestone in the association's journey, providing a platform for members to come together and chart the way forward for the organization.

The NBA Benin branch chairman highlighted the importance of the NEC meeting, which aimed to reflect on the association's journey, evaluate ongoing reforms, and identify pathways for a more resilient and impactful NBA.

Okomu Oil Palm Company Plc recently honored 82 employees, who had dedicated 15, 20, and 25 years of service to the company, at a grand ceremony held at its headquarters in Edo State. 

The awardees were showered with various household gift items, including king-sized beds, wardrobes, dining sets, upholstery chairs, generators, and 32-inch flat-screen television sets, as well as cash prizes in recognition of their years of service.

The Managing Director, Dr. Graham Hefer, praised the recipients for their unwavering commitment and contribution to the company's growth. 

"The staff who have been rewarded today have given back part of their contributions to this company. They have shown loyalty and commitment over the years, and we are privileged to have people who have worked with us for as long as 25 years," Dr. Hefer said. 

He encouraged other employees to emulate their example, noting that the company is proud to celebrate their dedication and service.

The Chairman of the Workers' Union, Comrade Ewansiha Clifford, lauded the management for recognizing the efforts of employees who have served diligently.

 "I want to thank the management for rewarding employees who have served the company meritoriously. To the awardees, I say congratulations. It is not an easy journey, but your patience has paid off," he said.

One of the awardees, Mrs. Eroje Joyce, expressed gratitude to the company for recognizing her 25 years of service. She described her experience as one filled with growth and learning, noting that the company had trained and equipped her with skills that could help her run a company of her own.

Their vision was bold to create a society where every individual, regardless of their background or socio-economic status, has access to opportunities that enable them to thrive. They envisioned a future where the less privileged are empowered to break the cycle of poverty and progress.

The group's mission was clear: to support the less privileged in society by providing micro-grants, school support, medical support, and other forms of assistance that empower them to improve their lives. 

They aimed to work collaboratively with the Government of Edo State to achieve its goals, including delivering dividends of democracy to the people. 

Their objective was multifaceted, with a focus on economic empowerment, educational support, medical assistance, and civic engagement.

Senator Imasuen emphasized the importance of inclusion, highlighting that understanding one's body and personal boundaries is crucial for building a just society. 

He stressed that both boys and girls must learn about respect, empathy, and responsibility to create a better future.

The Coordinator of the Edo State Office of the First Lady underscored the need for setting moral and behavioral boundaries, citing the alarming rate of sexual assault among young people.

 She emphasized that consent is paramount and that anyone who crosses personal boundaries is committing a serious offense.

Dr. Osigbovo Eriamiantoe of the University of Benin Health Centre advised young people to prioritize their mental health, warning that substance abuse and cultism can lead to depression and violence.

Representing the Edo State Commissioner for Youth Affairs, Permanent Secretary Iryn Omoroguiwa commended the initiative, reaffirming the government's commitment to providing safe spaces for youth engagement and development.

The Senator Okpebholo SHINE Agenda has enabled the office to emerge as a catalyst for change, focusing on strategic initiatives that empower women and promote inclusive governance.

At the heart of Mrs. Anani's work is a commitment to ensuring that women are active agents of change.

Western Delta University,  (WDU), Oghara, Delta State, will hold its   15th convocation ceremony for the  2024/2025 academic session on Saturday 15,2025.

This was made known yesterday in a statement signed and made available to the Press by the Acting Registrar, Mr O. Ofotokun.

Ofotokun  said the event would feature the conferment of degrees, diplomas and prizes on deserving students.

According to him, the university will also confer honourary doctorate degrees on two eminent Nigerians, Prince Adewale Adebayo, a legal Practitioner,philanthropist and former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general elections.

General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (retd), a former Chief of Army Staff and Minister of Interior will also be conferred with a honourary doctorate degree.

While Adebayo will receive a Doctor of Political Science (Honoris Causa), Dambazau will be conferred with a Doctor of Strategic Studies (Honoris Causa).

The Acting Registrer said, graduands have been directed to collect their academic gowns and invitation cards ahead of the event, adding that they are to be seated by 9:30 a.m., while guests are expected to be seated by 10:00 a.m.

According to the statement, the ceremony will commence with the commissioning of projects at 10:30 a.m., followed by a convocation lecture at 11:00 a.m. to be delivered by Professor Kyari Mohammed, former Vice-Chancellor of Modibbo Adama University of Technology and Nigerian Army University, Biu.

The highlight of the occasion,  the conferment of honorary degrees and presentation of academic awards. He stated.

As the Commissioner for Health in Edo State, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, reflected on the past year in office of Governor Monday Okpebholo's administration, he couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. "One year is very, very overwhelming," he said,

In a span of just one year, the governor's commitment to improving healthcare has yielded impressive results, showcasing a significant overhaul of the state's healthcare infrastructure.

highlighting the significant strides made in the health sector under Governor Monday Okpebholo's administration. With a record-breaking 61 primary healthcare centers commissioned in less than a year, the state's healthcare infrastructure has received a major boost.

The House Committee on Health Services from the National Assembly recently visited two primary healthcare centers in the state and was impressed with what they saw. 

"That is coming from the national assembly, not even state assembly, at least that alone,  is a credible comment you can take to the bank," Dr. Oshiomhole noted.

The administration has also launched the Oredo clinic to decongest the Central Hospital, and the Stella Obasanjo hospital is being renovated. A new agency for drug management and health commodities has been established, which will help manage the state's drug usage and value chain.

Dr. Oshiomhole emphasized the government's commitment to improving healthcare services in the state. The Edo Specialist Hospital, a major healthcare facility, has been equipped with modern equipment, including ICU facilities. 

The hospital has also benefited from the government's efforts to improve its infrastructure, including the installation of air conditioning units and transformers.

Despite the challenges, the hospital has maintained its services, even during the recent strike by resident doctors. 

"We are trying our best to meet up with demand," Dr. Oshiomhole said, adding that the government plans to expand the hospital and build a phase two, which will include a mortuary service.

The government has also taken steps to improve healthcare delivery in rural areas, including the provision of modern ultrasound machines for all 18 local government areas and the enrollment of 300 vulnerable individuals into the state's health insurance scheme.

Assessing the governor's administration achievement, Dr. Oshiomhole described it as "excellent." He cited the governor's commitment to food sufficiency, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development as notable achievements. 

The state has also received recognition for its efforts in food and nutrition, with the Nigerian Society of Food and Nutrition awarding Governor Okpebholo the best governor for food and nutrition.

The government has also made significant investments in agriculture, increasing the budget from N4 billion to N57 billion and acquiring 400 acres of land for agricultural purposes. 

With these initiatives, the government hopes to improve the lives of Edo citizens and make the state a model for healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

The Edo State Government has taken a firm stance against encroachment on government lands with the enactment of the Edo State Public Property Protection Law, 2025. 

This law aims to protect public assets from unauthorized occupation, sale, and misuse, and prescribes severe penalties for violators.

The Penalties for Encroachment includes -;

*10 years imprisonment*: for forceful or violent entry into government land.

*5 years imprisonment*: for unauthorized sale, lease, or transfer of government property without the Governor's consent.

*Prosecution and disciplinary action*: for professionals who facilitate or assist in illegal land transactions.

The Consequences of Encroachment are-:

*Loss of investment*: encroachers risk losing their entire investment, with no compensation for structures or developments made on the land.

*Invalid claims*: any claim of ownership or title obtained without proper authorization or the Governor's consent is null and void.

*Financial losses*: encroachment can lead to massive financial losses, including loss of property value and investment confidence.

*Reputational damage*: professionals who facilitate or assist in illegal land transactions risk damaging their reputation and facing disciplinary action.

 In it's commitment,the  Government has established the Edo State Public Property Protection Committee to oversee the protection and recovery of government properties. The committee has the power to:

"Inspect and recover government properties.

*Collaborate with law enforcement agencies* to evict illegal occupants.

*Publish names of offenders* as a deterrent to others

The government is committed to protecting public property and ensuring that projects for the collective good can proceed without disruption. 

Citizens are advised to respect government boundaries and avoid engaging in any form of encroachment.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, has requested that the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Edo State chapter, help promote and enlighten the public about Governor Okpebholo's  SHIINE agenda through their various media platforms .

During a courtesy visit, Afegbua emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and the media in highlighting the governor's initiatives and projects.

 He expressed confidence that working together would help raise awareness about the government's efforts and progress in Edo State. 

Afegbua praised the governor's bold and visionary economic reforms, describing them as the driving force behind the state's ongoing transformation and rapid development. 

He noted that the governor's policies have brought a new look to the state, citing ongoing flyover projects and infrastructure works across Edo.

Hon. Bright Iyamu, the representative of Orhionmwon-South Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, recently conducted an inspection of a newly constructed three-classroom block at Ofunmwengbe Primary School, Ugboko-Niro, in Orhionmwon Local Government Area.

 This project is part of his constituency intervention efforts aimed at enhancing the quality of education in the area.

During the visit, Hon. Iyamu interacted with the pupils and was given a tour of the school premises by the Head Teacher, Mr. Odigie Endurance.

 The latest cases of banditry, Boko Haram attacks, and state agency abuses have created a new reality that demands a heightened sense of awareness and vigilance from media practitioners.

Recently, Amnesty International raised the alarm over the weaponization of the law against journalists, highlighting a disturbing trend of arrests, intimidation, and silencing of those who dare to expose corruption and abuse of power. 

The case of Daniel Ojukwu, an investigative journalist who was detained for exposing a ₦147 million scam, and the detention of Dayo Aiyetan and Nurudeen Akewushola for alleged cyberstalking and defamation, are stark reminders of the challenges journalists face.

Legal practitioner and rights advocate, Dr. Abdul Mahmud, noted that these arrests are not about crime but about power and silencing journalists who expose the truth. 

He emphasized that the Cybercrimes Act has been twisted into a tool for persecution, violating fundamental provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.

The impact of these clampdowns on journalism is profound. Each arrest sends ripples of fear through newsrooms, pushing reporters towards self-censorship. The ultimate casualty is the Nigerian public, deprived of information critical to democratic accountability.

To address this issue, Dr. Mahmud recommended legislative reform of the Cybercrimes Act, stronger judicial protection for freedom of expression, independent oversight of security agencies, and a national reorientation that treats journalism as a pillar of democracy.

As journalists navigate this complex landscape, they must remain committed to their role as watchdogs of society. By sharing information, putting pressure on authorities, and working hard to save humanity, they can help ensure that the constitutional order is upheld and that press freedom is protected.

The struggle for press freedom is not just about journalists; it's about the Nigerian public's right to know and hold those in power accountable.

 As Dr. Mahmud aptly put it, "Press freedom is not a luxury. It is the lifeblood of democracy. A constitutional order that does not defend liberty, especially the liberty of the press, is a contradiction in terms."

The Edo State Commissioner for Education and State Director of the City Boy Movement, Paddy Iyamu, has expressed his profound appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's introduction of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). 

This initiative is designed to ensure that no child in Edo State is deprived of education due to financial difficulties.

In a recent address at the City Boy Movement empowerment program lunch in Benin City, Iyamu commended Governor Monday Okpebholo's first-year achievements, which include the establishment of 68 new schools, the provision of ₦1 billion in student bursaries, scholarships to China, and empowerment programs for women and small businesses. 

Iyamu described Governor Okpebholo as a virtuous leader who is committed to bringing succor to the needy in society.

Iyamu praised Governor Okpebholo, saying, "Governor Okpebholo is a virtuous son who goes to where the father wants him to go," adding that the governor is a listening leader who fixes problems once they are identified.

The APC State Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, expressed confidence that the party would deliver 3.5 million votes for President Tinubu in the next election. "No break, no gear, no sense," Tenebe said, emphasizing that Edo State has already settled everything for the President.

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, urged youths to support the City Boy Movement and ensure that Edo delivers the highest votes for President Tinubu in the South-South region in the next election. 

"With the Governor Okpebholo's performance, opposition in Edo will soon be a thing of the past," Idahosa declared.

The Minister of Youth Development, Hon. Ayodele Olawande, praised Governor Okpebholo's achievements, describing the event as a celebration of peace and progress. 

"The progress we see today is a result of the emergence of a dynamic governor committed to development," he said, highlighting the importance of youths in state and national agendas.

The Director-General of the City Boy Movement, Francis Oluwatosin, commended the Governor Okpebholo's progress in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, describing him as a visionary and silent achiever. 

He reaffirmed the group's commitment to mobilizing 10 million votes nationwide for President Tinubu in 2027.

In his remarks, Governor Okpebholo commended President Tinubu for his courageous and forward-thinking economic reforms, which he believes are propelling Nigeria's transformation and driving rapid development in Edo State.

The Governor emphasized that the President's policies have empowered states to undertake impactful projects, including ongoing infrastructure works and flyovers across Edo.

 Court Adjourns Cyberstalking Case Against Ex-Edo Governorship Candidate

A Benin High Court has adjourned the cyberstalking case against Paul Okungbowa, the Young People's Party (YPP) governorship candidate in the last Edo State election, until November 21, 2025. The adjournment was due to Okungbowa's absence and lack of representation in court.

When the case was called, the prosecution informed the court that the matter had not been assigned to a specific prosecutor, and requested that a hearing notice be served on the defendant and the Director of Public Prosecutions to allow for necessary applications on the next adjourned date.

Justice Rita Irele-Ifijeh granted the application and adjourned the case. This development follows Okungbowa's previous conviction and sentencing to six months' imprisonment by the Oredo Chief Magistrate Court in December 2024 for negligence and defamation.

 He was found guilty of calling a pupil's mother a prostitute in the presence of her husband, which led to a breach of public peace.

Okungbowa, owner of Calvary Crown Academy, was sentenced alongside three teachers who received varying prison terms with options for fines. After his conviction, 

Okungbowa allegedly made defamatory Facebook posts about the Aigbudu family, accusing them of bribing the magistrate, which led to the current cyberstalking charges.
