Edo Govt, IFAD Launch Life-Changing Livelihood Programme for 630 Youths and Women

Habiba SamIn a significant step towards empowering young people, women, and individuals with disabilities, the Edo State Government, in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), has launched a comprehensive livelihood programme aimed at transforming the lives of at least 630 beneficiaries. 

The programme, known as the Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises in the Niger Delta (LIFE-ND), kicked off with an orientation ceremony in Benin City.

Representing Governor Monday Okpebholo, Commissioner for Agriculture, Jerry Uwangue, emphasized the administration's commitment to modernizing agriculture and ensuring food security in the state. 

He highlighted the importance of agriculture as a pathway to prosperity and economic development, noting that the government's agricultural initiatives are designed to empower rural youth and women to engage meaningfully in agriculture.

The Programme Manager, Edo ADP, Mr. Princewill Igbinedion, who stood in for Commissioner Uwangue, thanked IFAD and the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for their consistent partnership and support for the project. 

Governor Okpebholo's representative reiterated the administration's commitment to nurturing young farmers into successful agripreneurs who can transform subsistence farming into profitable agribusiness ventures.

According to Governor Okpebholo, the LIFE-ND project objectives align perfectly with the vision of his administration to promote agricultural transformation and food security.

 "With 630 incubatees participating, we are not just training individuals; we are breeding a new generation of innovators, leaders, and wealth creators who will drive Edo State toward self-sufficiency in food production," he said. 

The Ministry of Agriculture remains committed to supporting all LIFE-ND beneficiaries through improved access to inputs, extension services, value chain development, and linkages to markets.

The Edo Project Coordinator of LIFE-ND, Mr. John Omoruyi, expressed the Governor's commitment to strengthening food security and empowering youths in agriculture. 

He disclosed that large hectares of land would be made available for beneficiaries and that many youths would be trained along business lines in agriculture. The project will be sustained across the 18 local government areas in the state.

In a note of caution, the Agribusiness Promotion Coordinator of the project, Esenwa Anthonia, urged the beneficiaries to take the project seriously, warning that those found not performing would be replaced. The National Coordinator of the project, Dr. Abiodun Sanni, represented by Osaegwiwa Justina, expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, noting that the project has overcome initial challenges and is now attracting more communities.

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) representative, Mrs. Osabuohien Clementina, advised the beneficiaries to use the fund for the intended purpose, cautioning against diverting it to other uses. 

With the launch of this programme, the Edo State Government and its partners are confident that the lives of 630 young people and women will be transformed, and the state's agricultural sector will be revitalized.

Amadin Desmond Enabulele, for his outstanding leadership and transformative impact on the state's sports sector.

 A high-powered delegation from the Chapel, led by Chairperson Mercy Onyenweli, paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman at his Benin City office, where they commended his visionary approach to sports development.

During the visit, Onyenweli described Enabulele as "a trailblazer who has revolutionized sports in Edo State," highlighting the Commission's expanded focus beyond football to encompass multiple sports disciplines. 

"Under your proactive leadership, sports activities have flourished, and Edo State is now reaping the benefits of your efforts," she said.

 Onyenweli also praised the Chairman's initiatives to develop grassroots sports, noting that this approach has added significant value to the state's sports landscape.

She also commended the Commission's media team, particularly Media Aide Mr. Edoko Wilson Edoko, for doing an excellent job in amplifying the Commission's work. 

"We feel like part of the Commission through the consistent reports shared by your media team," she added. 

Onyenweli explained that the Federated Chapel, one of sixteen under the NUJ Edo State Council, represents journalists across various media platforms, including broadcast, print, and online media.

In response, Executive Director representing Edo North, Hon. Frank Ilaboya, who received the delegation on behalf of the Executive Chairman, expressed gratitude for the Chapel's support and professionalism.

 "We appreciate your efforts in promoting the Commission's initiatives, and we look forward to strengthening our partnership with you," he said.

 The visit concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to deepening collaboration between the media and the sports community in Edo State.

The ceremony, which took place recently, was a testament to the company's commitment to promoting access to quality education and empowering the next generation of leaders.

The bursaries, totaling N8.4 million, were presented as part of the company's 2025 corporate social responsibility initiative. 

According to Mr. Fidelis Olise, the company's Communication Officer, the gesture is aimed at easing the financial burden on students from low-income families and promoting education in the company's host and neighboring communities.

Olise emphasized that the bursary scheme is a reflection of Okomu's long-standing commitment to human capital development and community empowerment.

"This initiative reflects our company's commitment to giving back and ensuring that students from our neighboring communities have the opportunity to pursue education without undue financial strain on their parents or guardians," he said.

Two of the beneficiaries, Samonghan Perekeme Ernest from Okomu and Egbon Sonia Osasumwen from Udo, expressed their gratitude to the company for the scholarship. 

They pledged to use the funds wisely and make their communities proud.

In a related development, Okomu Oil Palm Company also held a community relations training to foster dialogue and strengthen partnerships with neighboring communities. 

The engagement was designed to enhance collaboration and mutual understanding between the company and the communities. Community representatives described the initiative as "the oil that keeps the wheel of partnership and progress turning."

The maiden edition of the Benin Unity Cup, initiated by Senator Neda Imasuen, has taken a significant step forward with the unveiling of the trophy and the conduct of the draw ceremony. 

The event, held at the Media Centre of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, was attended by key stakeholders in the state's sports sector.

The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, commended Senator Imasuen for the initiative, describing it as a laudable effort that aligns with the state's vision for sports development. 

Enabulele emphasized the importance of nurturing young talents discovered during the competition through sustained development programs.

Senator Imasuen stated that the Benin Unity Cup was conceived to empower young people through sports by providing a structured platform for them to showcase their abilities. 

He assured that international scouts would be present to identify and develop the talents of the young players.

The draw ceremony, conducted by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon. Charity Amanyaevbo, grouped the participating teams into two groups. Group A consists of Ovia North East, Ikpoba-Okha, Egor, and Uhunmwode, while Group B comprises Oredo 1, Ovia South West, Orhionmwon, and Oredo 2.

The Director General of the National Institute for Sports, Comrade Philip Shaibu, lauded Senator Imasuen for the initiative, describing it as unique and inspiring. He disclosed that the NIS would soon establish zonal centers across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria to drive grassroots sports development.

The Benin Unity Cup is set to kick off on November 20 and climax on December 20, 2025. Each participating team will receive a full set of jerseys for 22 players. 

The champion will receive ₦1 million, the runner-up ₦700,000, the third-placed team ₦500,000, and the fourth-placed team ₦300,000. 

With its focus on grassroots talent and youth empowerment, the Benin Unity Cup is poised to become a key platform for discovering and nurturing the next generation of football stars from Edo State.

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has taken a significant step towards promoting digital inclusion in communities by inaugurating a Digital Learning Center (DLC) in Edo State.

 The center, located at Ujabhole Grammar School in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area, was commissioned on October 23, 2025, in a hybrid ceremony.

This initiative is part of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) in partnership with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Federal Ministry of Communication Innovation and Digital Economy. The Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, revealed that the administration has established 296 digital learning centers across Nigeria, with plans to add 148 more this year, aiming to reach 592 centers by 2027.

The Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady in Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, emphasized the importance of equipping students with cutting-edge technology, e-learning resources, and interactive tools to enhance their skills and enable them to compete in the 21st-century knowledge economy.

The Edo State Government has directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HoLGAs) across all 18 local government areas to proceed on compulsory leave, effective immediately. 

This decision was announced by the Chairman of the Edo State Local Government Service Commission, Alhaji Kabiru Adjoto, who explained that the move aims to revamp and reform the local government administration in the state.

According to Adjoto, the decision is part of the ongoing restructuring and revamping of the local government system, designed to strengthen administrative efficiency, promote accountability and transparency, and reposition the local government service for improved service delivery.

 The compulsory leave, he said, will enable a thorough assessment of administrative operations at the local government level, ensuring a fair and objective review of postings, staff deployment, and record management practices.

The Director of Administrative and General Services will take over and oversee the day-to-day administration of each local government pending further directives from the commission. All concerned officers have been directed to hand over properly and comply with the order without delay.

In a related development, the Akoko-Edo Head of Local Government Administration, Dr. Osaheni Igbinegie, and its Director of Finance have been placed on compulsory leave following an alleged petition leveled against them.

The Edo State Local Government Service Commission has also embarked on the digitization of its operations, with the Director of Budget Planning, Research, and Statistics, Osazee Obaizamomwan, revealing that about 382 shadow files were recovered and 138 retired files were still in the shelves, highlighting the need for the commission's digitization efforts. 

The commission has promised to pursue training and retraining of local government staff to enhance their performance.

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) is set to unlock the vast potential of solid minerals to drive economic growth and development in Nigeria. According to Mrs. Nonye Ayeni, Executive Director/CEO of NEPC, the council's initiative aims to contribute to the growth and development of the solid minerals sector, which is richly endowed in Nigeria, particularly in Edo State.

Edo State is blessed with an array of mineral deposits, including kaolin clay, limestone, gypsum, marble, granite, feldspar, dolomite, iron ore, and lignite. 

These mineral resources have the potential to drive economic diversification and job creation, particularly in rural areas where artisanal mining activities are significant sources of livelihood.

However, the solid minerals sector is faced with numerous challenges, including informality, lack of funding, and inadequate mining technology.

 To address these challenges, Ayeni proposed the establishment of state-supported cooperatives to integrate artisanal miners, capacity training on sustainable extraction and safety, and the development of a mineral processing center/facility to add value to raw materials.

The NEPC's mandate is to diversify Nigeria's export base by promoting and facilitating the development of non-oil exports. 

The council recognizes the contributions of the solid minerals sector to non-oil exports portfolio and the tremendous opportunities in achieving greater economic potentials through this intervention.

The seminar, themed "Strategic Engagement on Formalization/Standardization of Solid Minerals Development for Export Competitiveness," brought together policymakers, miners, processors, exporters, and other stakeholders to deliberate on practical strategies to enhance the formalization of operations, improve product quality, and ensure that solid minerals meet global market standards.

The Commissioner for Mining, Oil and Gas, Andrew Ijegbai, represented by the Director of Mining, Ihianle Omoruyi, commended the organizers of the event, saying what the country needs at this time is the development of the mining sector. 

He revealed that the Edo Government has floated and secured a license for a mining company and called for investors to take advantage of the window of opportunity.

The seminar aimed to provide a platform for stakeholders to share insights, experiences, and recommendations to shape actionable policies and frameworks that will drive the sustainable growth of the sector. 

With the right strategies and support, Nigeria's solid minerals sector can become a significant contributor to the country's economic growth and development.

The Edo State Geographic Information Service (EDOGIS) was established in 2017 to administer land resources, including land titling and management of landed properties. The new Managing Director, Dr. Tony Ikpasaja, and his team have expanded the scope of operations, aligning with the Governor's vision.

Decentralization of EDOGIS Offices

To extend EDOGIS services to the grassroots, Governor Okpebholo approved the opening of two new offices in Auchi (Edo North) and Ekpoma (Edo Central). These offices have been digitized and automated, making it easier for residents to access EDOGIS services without traveling to Benin City.

Successful Projects

EDOGIS has successfully carried out the acquisition, valuation, and compensation components of two key flyover projects and the New Town Project, which aims to decongest the city center. The agency's work has ensured that these projects are people-friendly and seamless.

In a shocking turn of events, the Commandant of the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Gbenga Agun, has tragically passed away. The incident occurred on Thursday at an event in Benin City, where Agun had been invited to deliver a keynote address.

According to eyewitnesses, Agun slumped and died shortly after concluding his speech at the event organized by the International Association of World Peace Advocates.

 Despite being rushed to the Military Hospital at Airport Road, Benin City, for immediate medical attention, Agun was pronounced dead on arrival.

As news of his passing spreads, the security community and the general public are in shock, mourning the loss of a dedicated and respected leader. Agun's sudden demise has left many questions unanswered, and the circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be fully disclosed.
