UBTH Outgoing CMD Says He Is Confident In Idia Ize-Iyamu's Ability To Do Better
The outgoing Chief Medical Director of University Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Darlington Obaseki, has expressed confidence that his successor, Mrs. Idia Ize-Iyamu, will excel in her new role and even surpass his achievements during his eight-year tenure as CMD.
Prof. Obaseki made this statement at the end of his valedictory lecture and book launch, which marked the culmination of his eight-year tenure at the hospital.
According to him, "I have known Mrs. Ize-Iyamu for years, and from her attributes, I know she will improve on what she's inherited and even do better."
"I am very confident that you will do well and even more better than I have done, with her God-fearing attributes, which is my prayer too for the betterment and growth of UBTH," he added.
Prof. Obaseki stated that his focus from the outset was to reposition UBTH as a future-ready teaching hospital grounded in strong governance, innovative practice, and compassionate service.
"We focused more on clinical delivery, provision of quality health services, training of healthcare workers, treating patients, producing a healthcare workforce, and conducting research, which has contributed to our success thus far," he said.
While thanking the staff and management of the institution for their love and cooperation during his tenure, he appealed to them to extend the same courtesy to the new CMD.
Prof. Obaseki highlighted one of his greatest accomplishments as CMD, which was ensuring that there were no industrial actions throughout his eight-year tenure, a testament to his effective leadership.
In a heartfelt tribute, the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, recounted their long-standing friendship and shared experiences, including their involvement in football games.
He affectionately referred to Prof. Obaseki as "My Twin Sticker," who scored many goals alongside with him.
Shaibu also praised Prof. Obaseki's leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he headed the medical team, leveraging UBTH's expertise in paramedicine.
"We are proud of you because you are very passionate in all you do, leaving remarkable marks for your assertion," Shaibu said.
In her goodwill message, the new CMD of UBTH, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, extolled Prof. Obaseki for his years of impactful service to the hospital.
"I congratulate you on your book launch, putting your thoughts and experiences into writing for the benefit of others. I wish you continued success in your future endeavors," she said.
The highlight of the event was the recognition of deserving staff members who demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the success of Prof. Obaseki's administration, receiving awards in appreciation of their hard work and dedication.
