When Governor Monday Okpebholo took office in November 2024, Edo State was plagued by land grabbing, hooliganism, and land racketeering, which had become a significant security challenge. However, the Governor's administration has made significant strides in addressing these issues and restoring order in land administration and allocation.Mandate of EDOGIS
The Edo State Geographic Information Service (EDOGIS) was established in 2017 to administer land resources, including land titling and management of landed properties. The agency is also responsible for administering land-based taxes and facilitating land acquisition and compensation for public interest projects. Under Governor Okpebholo's leadership, EDOGIS has been empowered to deliver cutting-edge services across the state.
Land Administration Reforms
Governor Okpebholo's administration has taken a bold step in reversing the trend of land grabbing and related security challenges. The Governor constituted a committee to resolve land-induced disputes and bring peace to restive communities. Within one year, the administration has significantly reduced land-related conflicts, and relative peace has been restored in parts of the state. This has boosted investor confidence, and the real estate business has received a significant boost.
SHINE Agenda
The Governor's SHINE agenda, which focuses on Security, Healthcare, Infrastructure and Road Development, Natural Resources and Food Security, and Education, has been instrumental in driving development in the state. Under this agenda, EDOGIS has been able to provide cutting-edge services, and the state has witnessed significant infrastructural development.
Technological Renewal in EDOGIS
When Governor Okpebholo took over, the previous administration's consultants had tampered with the EDOGIS software, crippling the agency's operations. However, the Governor's administration acquired new technological software to replace the tampered ones, and EDOGIS is now back on track. The new Managing Director, Dr. Tony Ikpasaja, and his team have expanded the scope of operations, aligning with the Governor's vision.
Decentralization of EDOGIS Offices
To extend EDOGIS services to the grassroots, Governor Okpebholo approved the opening of two new offices in Auchi (Edo North) and Ekpoma (Edo Central). These offices have been digitized and automated, making it easier for residents to access EDOGIS services without traveling to Benin City.
Successful Projects
EDOGIS has successfully carried out the acquisition, valuation, and compensation components of two key flyover projects and the New Town Project, which aims to decongest the city center. The agency's work has ensured that these projects are people-friendly and seamless.
Employment and Manpower Development
The Governor's administration has created opportunities for new employees, mostly Edo citizens, to be employed and trained to fit into the agency's agenda and vision. This has ensured that EDOGIS is well-equipped to deliver its mandate.
In just one year, Governor Okpebholo's administration has made significant strides in restoring order in land administration, promoting peace, and driving development in Edo State. The achievements of EDOGIS under his leadership are a testament to his commitment to delivering dividends of democracy to the people of Edo State.
