Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State says the spiritual guidance and prayers of the Catholic Archbishop of Benin City, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, played a decisive role in his leadership journey, as the cleric celebrated his 20th Episcopal Anniversary on Wednesday.
Speaking at the thanksgiving service held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Okpebholo recalled his first meeting with the Archbishop as a turning point that strengthened his resolve to serve Edo State.
“It is a special day for me,” the governor said. “The first day I met him, I saw the glory of God upon his life. I knew, by the time I knelt before him, that I was going to conquer.”
According to Okpebholo, he approached the Archbishop at a critical moment, asking for prayers as he prepared to confront some of the state’s most pressing challenges.
“I requested a prayer from him. I said I was going to fight cultism and work for Edo people. I needed him to pray for me so that God would give me the strength. Today, I am happy that everything I requested has been answered by God,” he said.
The governor stressed that Archbishop Akubeze’s counsel gave him both courage and direction, adding that the anniversary was more than a celebration of years—it was a celebration of impactful service and mentorship.
“These are 20 years, and we are still expecting more years to come,” Okpebholo said, congratulating the Archbishop and wishing him many more years of influence in the church and society.
The service drew a host of dignitaries, including the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion; former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; former Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu; and APC State Deputy Chairman, Sylvester Aigboboh.
Over the past two decades, Archbishop Akubeze has been widely recognized for fostering spiritual growth, promoting peace, and influencing governance through moral guidance—an impact that continues to resonate with leaders and citizens alike.
