The Managing Director of Edo State Geographic Information Service, EDOGIS, Dr. Innocent Ehi Bello, visited his counterpart at Nasarawa State Geographic Information Service, NAGIS, Dr. Sonny Agasi, in Karu. The visit formed part of his tour to study how other state GIS agencies manage land administration in Nigeria.Receiving Dr. Bello, Hon. Agasi recalled their first meeting in 2023 when Dr. Bello, then National Secretary of the Nigerian Cartographic Association, visited ahead of the association’s international conference in Lafia. He commended Dr. Bello for taking time to assess NAGIS facilities, software, and work culture firsthand, stressing that collaboration among state GIS bodies is key to progress.
Hon. Agasi explained that his achievements at NAGIS were made possible by the strong backing of Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule. He noted that reporting directly to the Governor has made land administration more efficient and free from bureaucratic delays.
He urged GIS leaders across states to work together to curb land disputes, insecurity, and violence often fueled by illegal land deals. According to him, stronger networking will improve land titling, speed up issuance of Certificates of Occupancy, check land grabbing, and ensure proper compensation when needed. It will also boost state revenue through better management of ground rent, valuations, and other land-related services.
Dr. Bello, who has engaged with GIS agencies since 2006 starting with AGIS in Abuja, called for more cooperation and knowledge-sharing among state GIS offices. He pledged to apply lessons from Nasarawa in Edo State, where Governor Monday Okpebholo is driving reforms to improve the business environment. He also thanked Governor Sule for maintaining stability at NAGIS by retaining Hon. Agasi in office.
The EDOGIS boss promised to replicate the insights and warm reception he received during his four-day tour of Karu and Lafia in Edo State.
The meeting ended with a group photo featuring both directors, the Sarkin Gurku, HRH Alhaji Jibrin Waziri, and the site engineer handling the Abuja-Keffi highway project.
