EBS Gets a Proven Builder: South-South NUJ Voices Full Confidence in Alenkhe’s Developmental Achievements
In a communiqué released on Saturday, June 13, 2026, after its zonal meeting in Calabar, Cross River State, the Council described the appointment as a fitting acknowledgment of Alenkhe’s exemplary leadership and years of dedicated service to the journalism profession. The session was chaired by the Zonal Vice President, Comrade Opaka Dokubo.
The Council praised Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo of Edo State for selecting Alenkhe, noting that the decision reflects foresight and sound judgment. In the words of the South-South NUJ, the appointment is “a round peg in a round hole,” given Alenkhe’s deep understanding of broadcast operations and his commitment to professional excellence.
Beyond commendations, the zonal body raised serious concerns about the safety of media practitioners in the region. It strongly condemned the rising cases of assault, intimidation, and online harassment targeted at journalists across the South-South. The Council called on security agencies to respond promptly and decisively to protect press freedom and ensure journalists can carry out their duties without fear.
The meeting also reviewed the country’s worsening security situation. It urged governments in the South-South states to intensify support for community policing initiatives as a practical way to curb crime and build safer neighborhoods.
On infrastructure, the zone applauded the Federal Government for completing the Aba–Ikot Ekpene Highway and for the steady progress recorded on the Calabar–Itu Highway. However, it stressed that work on both routes must be accelerated to ease transportation, boost economic activity, and reduce the alarming rate of road accidents and fatalities.
The Council further called for immediate environmental cleanup and remediation in oil-producing communities, noting that years of degradation have continued to affect health, livelihoods, and the overall wellbeing of residents.
In appreciation, the South-South NUJ thanked the Cross River State Council for hosting the meeting. It also ratified Elder Bolaji Anani as Zonal Patron, recognizing his contributions to the union. The Council charged all state councils within the zone to remain financially committed to zonal programs and to uphold the ethics and discipline of the NUJ as the 2027 general elections approach.
The communiqué reaffirmed the union’s resolve to defend journalism, promote unity among media professionals, and partner with government at all levels for the growth of the region and the nation.
