The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Edo State on Public Affairs, Razak Zekeri, has commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for initiating steps to set up special courts dedicated to the speedy trial of kidnapping and cult-related offences across the state.

Razak described the governor’s move as “timely, bold, and a clear demonstration of political will” to curb violent crime and restore public confidence in the justice system. He noted that by the governor’s decisive action, there will be relative peace and renewed sense of security across the three senatorial districts of Edo State.

Governor Okpebholo made the declaration during the parade of suspects linked to recent incidents at the Vegetable Market in Benin City, where a woman was kidnapped in broad daylight and taken away.

Razak praised the governor’s swift intervention, which led to coordinated security operations that resulted in the woman’s safe release.

Governor Okpebholo has formally requested the Chief Judge of Edo State to nominate three judges, or any number deemed appropriate, to constitute the proposed courts. If approved, the special courts will be mandated to hear and determine cases relating to kidnapping and cultism on an accelerated basis. The goal is to reduce delays in prosecution and strengthen the administration of criminal justice in Edo

According to Razak, if established, the special courts would rank among the most significant judicial interventions in recent years aimed at tackling kidnapping and cult-related crimes in Edo State.

He added that the measure is expected to complement ongoing security operations by the state government and law enforcement agencies in the fight against criminal activities.

“This is leadership in action. The governor did not just talk, he acted. His quick response secured the release of the kidnapped woman and now he’s putting structures in place to ensure justice is swift. Edo people will sleep better knowing that crime does not pay,” Razak said.
