The Edo Broadcasting Service, EBS, has come under the spotlight for all the right reasons following its impressive handling of the just-concluded Local Government elections in Edo State. Under the watch of Acting Managing Director, Festus Alenkhe, the state broadcaster delivered what many have described as its most thorough and professional election coverage to date, earning applause from civil society groups, political observers, and residents across the state.
On election day, EBS TV ran a seamless, non-stop broadcast that tracked events from voting to collation. Correspondents were deployed to all 18 local government areas, giving viewers in Edo and those in the diaspora real-time reports from polling units and collation centers. This ensured that the public was kept informed as events developed across the state.
Beyond just reporting the facts, the station went further to educate the public. EBS assembled a team of respected university dons, political commentators, and governance specialists in its studio.
Throughout the day, they offered clear explanations, historical context, and expert insights on the electoral process. Viewers widely praised this approach for making the election easier to understand.
The climax of the broadcast was the live feed from the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission, EDSIEC, headquarters in Benin City, where the official results were confirmed and announced. Millions of Edo people watched the transmission live, and many described it as a significant step toward openness and accountability in the state’s electoral system.
Speaking on the development, stakeholders commended EBS management for its dedication to duty and service to the people.
Comrade Pius Ehigiamusoe, Coordinator of Rights Guard, said the station had raised the bar and urged it not to relent.
“This is the kind of objective and people-centered journalism we expect from a public broadcaster. EBS should sustain this standard,” he stated.
Also reacting, Benin City resident and public affairs analyst, Dr. Lukeman Braimah, described the coverage as refreshing. He encouraged Mr. Alenkhe to continue the good work and build on the momentum.
Importantly, many of those who spoke also credited the transformation at EBS to the recent appointment made by the state government. They applauded Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for naming Festus Alenkhe as Acting Managing Director, noting that the decision was timely and strategic.
In their words, the appointment was “a round peg in a round hole, right on time” with the governor’s vision for a more effective and credible public media outfit. They expressed optimism that under Alenkhe’s leadership, EBS will continue to lead in credible broadcast journalism and public enlightenment.
The commendations suggest that Governor Okpebholo’s decision is already yielding positive results, with EBS now being positioned as a reliable voice for information and democratic accountability in Edo State.
