In a statement issued on Thursday, the Governor said the late Archbishop played an instrumental role in the emergence of his administration and the delivery of the dividends of democracy to the people of Edo State.
"Archbishop Akubeze was a faithful man of God. He spoke the truth at all times without fear or favor," Governor Okpebholo stated.
"He was a father to everyone. Through his leadership, he brought productivity and growth not only to the Catholic Diocese of Benin, but his influence was felt across the Catholic Church worldwide."
The Governor noted that the Edo State Government has lost a diligent father and a moral compass who consistently advocated for a society built on justice, integrity and validation of human dignity.
"On behalf of the Government and good people of Edo State, I say that he will be missed and loved forever. He was an outstanding man of God that we can never forget," the Governor added.
Archbishop Akubeze passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at the age of 69.
Governor Okpebholo prayed that Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest and gives the Catholic faithful, his family, and all Edo people the strength to bear this great loss.
