The Edo State Government in partnership with the Federal Government is providing free and comprehensive care for women and girls living with Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF) in the state and across the South-South region. The initiative, which is aimed at restoring the health, dignity and quality of life of those affected by the condition, offers 100 per cent free corrective surgery to ensure that cost does not prevent patients from accessing specialised treatment.
According to the government, the programme goes beyond surgery, as beneficiaries will also enjoy free feeding and transportation support to address practical challenges that often hinder women from seeking or completing treatment.
The free fistula services are being coordinated through the National Obstetric Fistula Centre in Benin City, including its temporary site at the Ugbor Primary Healthcare Centre.
The collaboration was further strengthened following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Edo State Government and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for the establishment of the regional National Obstetric Fistula Centre in the state.
The partnership is expected to expand access to specialised fistula care and boost capacity to deliver compassionate and quality services within Edo State.
The programme is open to women and girls living with VVF in Edo State and neighbouring states in the South-South geo-political zone.
The Edo State Government has therefore urged women and girls affected by the condition, their families and communities, to take advantage of the services and seek medical help without delay.
The government noted that VVF is a treatable medical condition and no woman or girl should suffer in silence or feel ashamed or isolated because of it.
It reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Federal Government and relevant health institutions to ensure that affected women receive free treatment, compassionate care and the necessary support to reclaim their dignity and wellbeing.
