Edo State Battles Dengue Fever Outbreak Amidst Rising Health Concerns

This alarming development was disclosed by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, during a high-level press briefing in Benin City.
The viral disease is transmitted through the bite of Aedes mosquitoes, which thrive in areas with poor sanitation and stagnant water.
Residents are urged to take preventive measures, including keeping their surroundings clean, covering water containers, and using mosquito nets and insect repellents.
The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), is working tirelessly to contain the outbreak.
Director Public Health, Dr. Stephenson Ojiefoh, has been appointed as the incident manager to lead the response efforts, and the Emergency Operation Center has been activated to coordinate a statewide response plan.
The Health Commissioner also provided updates on other disease outbreaks in the state, including-Lassa Fever, 137 confirmed cases with 24 deaths-Yellow Fever,2 confirmed cases with 1 death,Monkeypox (Mpox),8 confirmed cases with no deaths,Diphtheria- 8 confirmed cases with 3 deaths.
The Health Commissioner assured that the current administration under Governor Monday Okpebholo remains fully committed to protecting the health of residents and will continue working until all outbreaks are brought under control.
The Ministry's response plan includes surveillance, case management, vector control, and environmental sanitation across all affected areas.
