Edo State Flags Off 16 Days of Activism Against GBV

The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has launched the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign observed annually from November 25th to December 10th. This year's theme, "Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls," is particularly relevant in today's digital age.
The Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Edo State, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, highlighted the alarming statistics of online violence against women and girls.
She noted that nearly 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced some form of online violence, and women are more likely than men to be harassed online.
The Commissioner emphasized that digital violence is real, harmful, and preventable. She appealed to lawmakers and media partners to join the ministry in creating safer digital spaces for women and girls through legislation and digital literacy.
The Edo State Government has taken significant steps to strengthen the protection of women and girls, including establishing Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) and promoting digital literacy and safety campaigns in schools and communities.
The government remains resolute in ensuring that all women and girls are safe, both offline and online, and that perpetrators of digital violence.
The ministry has planned a series of activities to mark the 16 Days of Activism, including a road walk, statewide digital online safety campaign, social media advocacy, community-focused sensitization, and a stakeholders' conference.
The Honourable Commissioner called on all citizens to join the movement to build safer digital and physical spaces.
She urged parents and guardians to monitor and guide children's online interactions, teachers and schools to integrate digital safety education, and technology companies and telecoms to strengthen reporting systems and protective measures.
The 16 Days of Activism Against GBV is an opportunity to raise awareness, build partnerships, and take collective action to prevent digital violence against women and girls.
The Edo State Government is committed to protecting the rights, dignity, and safety of every woman and girl in the state.
