Rev. Fr. Romanus Mbakwe, Benin Archdiocesan chaplain of the Catholic Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (CAMPAN), has urged Catholic media practitioners to defend their job and their faith
He made this call at the 2025 Advent Retreat/Love Feast program held at the St. Paul Minor Seminary Chapel in Benin City recently.
Father Mbakwe emphasized the importance of diligence and integrity in journalism, stating, "You are the voice of the people and the hope of society."
He charged media practitioners to be upright in their reportage, avoiding misinformation and ensuring that their reporting reflects the truth. "We must be the voice that says it the way it is without misinforming the public and society," he added.
The priest also encouraged media practitioners to stand firm and uphold the dignity of their profession, even in the face of challengeIn the spirit of Advent, Father Mbakwe urged the practitioners to prepare their hearts for the coming of Jesus Christ. He reflected on the theme "Joyful Hope For the Coming of our Savior Jesus Christ," explaining that Jesus comes to us in three ways: historically, when He was born of the Virgin Mary; mystically, when we partake in the sacraments; and majestically, when6 He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead.
Father Mbakwe warned that Jesus' coming is imminent and that we will all be judged by our conduct and deeds. "We are expected to clear our hearts to receive Him, prepare ourselves in joy for His coming, and be rewarded for our stewardship and faithfulness or punished for our sins," he said.
The priest concluded by urging the practitioners to take the Advent season seriously and to use it as an opportunity to reflect on their lives and ministries.
"May His coming bring us peace and joy," he said, encouraging the practitioners to remain steadfast in their faith and to continue to be a source of hope and inspiration to their audience.
