In a shocking incident that has sparked widespread condemnation, Juliet Enabulele, a reporter with the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS), was assaulted and manhandled by Kelly Okungbowa, also known as Ebo Stone, at a public function in Benin City on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a blatant attack on press freedom and the safety of journalists.

The NUJ leadership expressed outrage over the incident, stating that it was unacceptable for anyone to attack journalists in the line of duty.

The union emphasized that journalists have a constitutional right to carry out their duties without fear of intimidation or violence. The assault on Enabulele is seen as a direct attack on the media's ability to report freely and hold those in power accountable.

The NUJ has warned that attacks on journalists will no longer be tolerated and has called on members of the public, especially public figures, to exercise restraint and show respect for the constitutional role of the media in strengthening democracy and promoting accountability.

The union's leadership emphasized that the era of impunity for attacks on journalists is over and that those responsible for such attacks will be held accountable.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for swift action to be taken against the perpetrator.

The NUJ has demanded that the Nigeria Police and other security agencies immediately investigate the incident and ensure that justice is served.

The union's leadership has made it clear that they will not rest until those responsible for the assault are brought to book.

The assault on Enabulele has also raised concerns about the safety of journalists in Nigeria. The NUJ has emphasized that journalists are not above the law, but they should not be subjected to violence or intimidation while carrying out their duties.

The union has called on the authorities to take concrete steps to protect journalists and ensure that they can work freely without fear of attack or reprisal.

The NUJ's condemnation of the assault has been echoed by many in the journalism community. The union's leadership has vowed to take all necessary steps to protect the rights and interests of journalists in the state.

The incident has highlighted the need for greater protection and support for journalists, who often put their lives at risk to report on important stories and hold those in power accountable.

The NUJ's swift response to the incident has been welcomed by many, and there is hope that the union's efforts will lead to greater protection and support for journalists in the state.

As the investigation into the incident continues, the NUJ has urged members to remain vigilant and to report any further incidents of violence or intimidation.

The union's leadership has pledged to continue fighting for the rights and interests of journalists, and to work towards creating a safer and more conducive environment for journalists to work in.
