NUJ, NAWOJ Leadership Pay Condolence Visit to Family of Late Mrs. Ekiuwa Umuerri

It was a solemn morning in Benin City as the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Edo State Chapter, paid a condolence visit to the children of the late Mrs. Ekiuwa Umuerri.

The NUJ delegation, led by its Chairman, Dr. Festus Alenkhe, included Vice Chairman Comrade Ade Agho and Secretary Comrade Andy Egbon. They were joined by NAWOJ Chairperson, Comrade Habiba Sam.

Mrs. Umuerri, a retired journalist and former member of the State Information Chapel of the NUJ, was described as a pillar of NAWOJ and a mother to many in the profession. Until her death, she was the proprietress of Mega Montessori, Benin City.

Addressing the family, Dr. Alenkhe recalled the late journalist’s generosity and loyalty to the union. “Your mother was a kind and generous woman. She played a vital role in my election and honored me with a grand reception after my victory,” he said. “Be steadfast and rest assured that she is resting well with God. Please avail the union of the burial arrangements so we can fully participate.”

Speaking on behalf of NAWOJ, Comrade Habiba Sam described the deceased as a remarkable leader whose impact transcended her retirement from active journalism. “She was a mother to us all—steadfast in her support for our association and for everyone who encountered her. She will surely be missed for her love, generosity, elegance, and motherly discipline,” she said, before presenting an official condolence letter to the family on behalf of NAWOJ and the NUJ leadership.

Responding on behalf of the family, her son, Dr. Umuerri, thanked the unions for the visit, noting that it was not unexpected. “Our late mother always spoke fondly of the NUJ. We are pained by her passing, but the way she lived her life gives us cause to reflect. She made a remarkable impact in her time on earth. It is a call for us all,” he said.

The visit ended with the NUJ and NAWOJ leaders signing the condolence register, reaffirming their solidarity with the bereaved family.

May her gentle soul find eternal rest🙏
