Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has issued a stern warning to criminals, stating that kidnappers and cultists operating in the state will face the full weight of the law, including capital punishment if convicted by the courts. The governor spoke on Thursday during a parade of suspects at the Edo State Police Command Headquarters in Benin City. The event also served to commend officers who arrested a suspect linked to Sunday’s kidnapping at the Vegetable Market.
“We will establish a special court to fast-track prosecution of kidnappers and cultists. Within two weeks, cases should be concluded.
"And I will sign it, the execution by hanging. I will take you to the roundabout, that is Ring Road roundabout so that the whole Edo people will see you. And this, I will not have any regret about it. So please don’t take my simplicity for granted”, Okpebholo warned.
He noted that he directed the Commissioner of Police to act immediately after Sunday’s incident. One suspect was arrested, one was neutralized during the operation, and two others remain at large.
“Criminals will find no hiding place in Edo. My message is clear: you will be arrested, prosecuted, and if found guilty, you will face the maximum punishment under Nigerian law. We are working round the clock with your sponsors to make Edo safe,” he added.
Governor Okpebholo also defended federal support for security agencies, saying the results being recorded show that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is adequately funding security operations.
He urged residents to avoid crime, stressing that living within one’s means is safer and more sustainable than risking life through criminality.
To reward diligence, the governor presented N10 million to the police team that apprehended the kidnap suspect.
State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Monday Agbonika, confirmed that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining gang members. Items recovered include a red Lexus RX 350, registration EKP 848 AE, a pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, a motorcycle, and N2,250,000 suspected to be proceeds of crime.
Agbonika thanked the governor and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for their support, and called on the public to continue providing credible information to the police.
